I use SPD pedals from my MTB on my road bike... this way I can wear whatever shoes I want and just go.

I also have mountain SPDs on my road bike that I use for commuting.  I like the shoes so much better!

I trained and raced using MTB pedals and shoes on my road bike for several years. It was only when my wife bought me some tri-bike shoes that I swapped over. If you are not a "shoes on the bike" kind of racer, the MTB shoes sure make running in transition easier!

I had mtb pedals on my first road bike.  problem is that it takes longer to put on ble mtb shoes in transition.  I actually like the mtb pedals better with the two sided cleats.  I actually have a friend who is a double ironman that uses mtb shoes and pedals because he likes them better.

I ran mountain bike pedals on my roadbike for a long time.  Then when I started learning about how stuff actually works, (Transferring power to the pedals).  Long story short, I bought new road shoes with a carbon fiber sole, no flex what so ever.  I tried a few pedals, and ended up with speedplay.  They have some "Float" to them, and you can click in on both sides.  

In conclusion, MTB pedals are just fine, but study up if you ever want to go to road shoes and pedals..

I use MTB shows and dual sided pedals.  Im not one for leaving my shoes clipped on.  I tried and I'm faster putting them on in T1 and doing a moving mount.  The tread on the bottom of my MTB shoe helps to keep my foot in place without the need to clip in, so its pretty fast and I dont need to slow down or stop to get on the bike at the mount line like many do.  

I can take my shoes off pretty easy while on the bike so on the dismount, I leave them clipped in and run barefoot to T2.

High end mountain bike shoes also have carbon soles.

I use mtb shoes and pedals on my road bike. I have no plans to change that.
