I know they can be strenuous to the body, but does anyone else feel extremely fatigued that day or the following?  I did run intervals on the treadmill Wednesday at lunch (total 30 min.), and did bike intervals last night (total 1hr.).  I am so tired.  But it seems that it was only and hour and half of training, and that included WU and CD.

If you dont normally do them, yeah, they can tire you out. Or even if you do them often, they still seem to be pretty tiring! As long as your not adding in too many intervals too soon, you should be fine

Sure.  Because what matters for fatigue is your total training load, which incorporates both volume and intensity.

My thoughts:

You might have done them too hard, but I can't say for certain.  I can say that you probably are lacking the aerobic base to be doing intervals right now.  In short, you don't need them, you're better off replacing them with some regular mileage.

Check your reading comprehension.  Tongue out

Back to the OP, your volume appeared to jump DRAMATICALLY last month--mostly on the bike.  It's no wonder you're fatigued.

Thanks, I didn't want to have to say it.

It is somewhat new to me.  I know they are probably not necessary at this point, but it breaks up the monotony of z2 runs and bikes all the time.  And it's not even a weekly thing.  Maybe every other week or so.  And I did go from less than 200 miles on the bike to 400 last month.  I guess that's a possibility too.  But I would have thought that I would have been tired then.  Not after almost 2 easier weeks.

If you wanna break up the monotony, then throw in some strides on your medium or longer runs, or just pick a day where you run hard.  Ditch the HRM or whatever, and just go out and run by feel.

That works pretty good without tearing you up as bad.

Do you have a plan and are you following it?  It would be rare that a plan would call for intervals on back to back days.

Since you mention it not being a weekly thing, I would guess you are just piecing together different workouts; if that is the case, the general rule should be (at most) hard one day, easy the next.

It's normal to feel fatigued the day after a set of hard interval training.  The key is to make sure that you recover properly before doing any more high intensity work.  ie. don't do back to back hard days - take a day off/do an easy ride, run or swim the day (or two) after.

"intervals" is also not very specific. It just means running/biking/swimming at a particular pace/power/HR for a particular period of time.

What type of intervals where you doing?
