What's with the swimmers' double capping? don't they get hot? I understand doing it in an OWS if the water is cold and to be able to place goggles between layers so you don't lose them when kicked, but in a pool???

It's easy to lose goggles when you go off the blocks.  The two caps could be to hold the goggles in place better when you're starting.  That's my best guess.

Man, it takes me 5 minutes as it is to get the damn cap on my head.  If I had to get another one on there, I'd have to start in the next wave.

3. Makes your head feel like it's floating in the water... more of a mental game, but apparently gives them an edge.

Never thought of that...  If you trap some air between the first and second caps, it would provide a little additional bouyancy and make it smoother.

Actually last night one of the female U.S. swimmers (can't remember which one) had 3 caps on.  At the end of the race, I remember seeing her holding one in her hand and there were still 2 on her head (different colors, so easy to tell).  I can't recall whether the goggles were between caps 1 and 2, or 2 and 3.  Might have been McLoughlin?

I am not pro, but if you look at the caps the US was wearing the one on the top looked more rigid and did not seem to bunch up as much.  Probably less drag.

Top cap is to reduce drag. IMO. They might be a silicon base. I typically put on my cap then my goggles. I  can easily adjust my goggles during practice if I need to. The goggle strap seems to stay in place with a cap on first. On the other hand to reduce drag you could put on another cap. Your goggles stay on not because of the strap but because of the suction on the  eye. I think it was Hoff that had them on so tight over her forehead before the race that she had circles during the post race interview. This can be painful for a workout, but can you imagine the pain of having lost your goggles at the Olympics or any other competition.

I thought it was a sponsor thing. First cap has one sponsor on it, then after the race, they take it off and there's a different sponsor on the second cap.....maybe???

I double cap for two reasons. One, is to keep my goggles in place diving through waves or into a pool. Second, is that I have hair almost to my waist and it helps to have the second cap to hold on the first! Plus, if one cap splits, I have a back-up!

Silicone caps are more hydrodynamic. The bottom cap (latex) is used to keep the top cap (silicone) from slipping off. Simply, silicone caps grip latex a lot better than they grip hair.
