Subject: Hurricane Hanna-Any tips on how to race in the rain?

HI,

New to posting, but not new to the site.   Looks like Hurricane Hanna is going to make a pathetic appearance up here in Mass on Sunday.  Which of course is the day I'm doing the Sprint in Hopkinton.    I'm interested in hearing anyone's thoughts and suggestions for TRI'ing in wind and rain.    Bike carefully and put my running shoes upside down in the transition area is what I've found so far.    Anyone out there have any other tips?

Thanks,

KMF

Bike carefully.

Wear bike gloves to improve your grip on the wet handlebars.

Wear glasses on the bike so little nasties don't blow into your eyes. Clear ones are best. Amber or yellow ones are pretty good. Dark ones are worst for visibility.

You can probably drink less than usual.

If it's cold and if you're a relatively slow biker, you might consider arm warmers for the bike leg. If you're quick on the bike you won't be out as long and probably won't need them. It's a sprint after all.

I thought I read something once about cleaning your tires the day before with vinegar, but I can't seem to find it. I don't know if this actually helps or not.

If you wear contacts, I would make sure you have a hat.  Really heavy rain can cause them to float around.  Years ago I tried running in Florida in a really heavy rain and had to shiled my eyes with my hand to keep my contacts from coming out.

Be VERY careful on turns on the biek.  last year my brother broke his collar bone slipping on water in a turn.  He was NOT going fast at the time.

I love running in the rain as long as there is no local lighting.

If the roads are open to traffic, put a red blinker on the back, to increase visibility.

I would def wear a hat and glasses.

In the transition bags might want to pack warmer clothes because you can always add or take off based on the weather.

I would also make sure you bring a dry change of clothes so you can change right after the tri amd bring a towel to really dry off

In case you haven't ridden in the rain before... stay away from the painted lines and any metal... they will be very slippery!!

I always pack a big plastic garbage bag in my transition bag, especially if rain is in the forecast. You can put your transition bag in it to keep it dry during the race, and then use it to carry your wet gear afterwards. Some people put their bike and running shoes in plastic bags as well. Depends how much you mind running in wet shoes, I guess, since they’re going to get wet eventually anyway.

Raced the Chattanooga Oly this year in a heavy Rainstorm, huge downpours. I would say an overall 5% taken off the top end bike speeds compared to no rain on straightaways, and extra careful around tight turnes and curves.

If you wear glasses, it will become difficult to see out of them if the rain is heavy. I had to take mine off mid ride. My suggestion is to wear them on the bike, but have a place to put them if it gets to that point... and if it's raining heavily, it will get to that point.

The rain will really hurt as it hits your skin at 30 to 40 mph, in other words, downhill. At 20 mph, it still stings a little.

Otherwise, on the bike, there's not much else you can do. Just be careful.. know your redefined limits and stick to them.

On the run, visor or hat. Still no glasses. Since it's only a sprint, don't bother changing into dry socks.

Read some of this years Chattanooga Waterfront Triathlon race reports. Just about every one will have stories about riding in the rain and how they coped.

Use two garbage bags in transition, one for under your stuff and one for over. You are going to get wet no matter what, but at least it will be easier to get your socks and stuff on.

If your distance was longer then a sprint, I'd take time to body glide your feet and toes, but 3 miles of running won't blister them up bad if at all.
