This is my first season doing Tri's, and I have only been biking for about 6 months.  I am having a lot of trouble averaging anything over 20-21 mph in a race and it is somewhat discouraging to have a decent swim and then have 30 people fly by me on the bike.  I have a coach with a consistent training plan, so my skills are coming along I suppose.  I guess my question is how long did it take you guys to really develop a solid base on the bike, and how long did it take before you really started to see some good bike splits?

3-4 years?  That's kind of depressing.  I've been riding since May and I've certainly had improvement, but currently don't see how I'm going to get that much faster.  I'm hoping I'll surprise myself next year.  I'm not discouraged at this point, but the one ride I did (with drafting) and averaged 20.6 mph for 17 miles I currently don't see how I could maintain that pace for an Oly or HIM (I've only done one Oly but would like to do a HIM next summer).

Take a step back and look at what you wrote. 20+ ave mph after 6 months? That's pretty darn impressive. What's your goal and what's your plan to get there? You need to log lots of mile for a long time. You need to log a variety of miles for a long time. Keep at it, you'll get there.

I don't really have any serious long term goals at this point.  I plan to tray and keep up 400+ minutes a week over the winter and see what happens.  I don't train to race, but liek training by itself.  Races are extra.  I'm thinking I'd like to do a HIM next summer, but it depends on how my knees hold up.

Just keep logging the miles and the speed will come.  With me I noticed big increases in fitness over the first few months but then I kind of levelled off for a year (injury didn't help here).  It was going into my second year of riding, after putting in a huge number of base miles over winter, that I really started to notice big gains in fitness/speed.

It takes a long time. Maintaining a 20+mph ave speed takes a lot of energy. Be patient, it will come.

For biking only 6 months, you are doing better than most. As others have suggested, after getting used to the bike initially, improvement will come over years, not months. Consistent training through the winter is key.

averaging 20 to 21 miles per hour for 17 miles after 6 months of training is awesome! More speed will come with time. Just keep at it!

It is all relative your idea is fast is someone else's idea of super fast or someone's slow. I improve the most dramatically in my third season after about 1.5 years of consistent bike training. Now my gains are smaller but I am getting more efficient.
