Subject: Best Iron Distance Race

I did IM Wisconsin in 2007 and would like to take on the Iron challenge again in the future. However, in an effort to not have to be logged on to a computer the minute online registration opens for an IM sanctioned event, I'm considering a "non sanctioned" IM race. Wonder has anyone done one of the "other" races? Right now, I'm drawn to either the Redman in Oklahoma or the Great Illini Challenge in Illinois.

Thanks.

It's like a paddle boat...only it has a 39/53 crank with STI shifters.

Just kidding.  I have no idea......sounds like a s/b duo.

Aqua bike or aqua velo ........ swim and bike.

I did Chessieman aqua velo in my build up last year.

As for independent's?  Chesapeakeman is a nice flat course, but challenging with heat and wind.  Same with Great Floridian.  Doesn't Vineman have a full?  And the Beach 2 Battleship happens soon, so you'll be able to hear about it.

Yes, Vineman has a really nice full IM distance race. It's one of the oldest in the US.

FWIW, I did the Great Illini half last year and thought it was a very well ran race. The swim was calm and the field was quite small. The only drawback is that the bike and run courses can be quite boring. Cornfields, soybeans then more cornfields. That said it was well worth the money and was well supported. There is not much crowd support so it will be quite different from IMOO. Steve

Dumb question but what was the water temp last year.  I am hoping to do Redman next year if I still live in TX but I am thinking of moving to Ohio and that means Illinois will be a better fit but I hate cold water.

I did the Grand Columbian full this year in Washington.  Unfortunatly the RD said it was the last year it was being offered, but he kinda hinted that he might open it up again in the future.

I thought it was a wonderful race, small but wonderful.

I did the Plymouth IM distance race in a relay. It was good in many ways but I would not opt for it to be my A race of the season. 4 loop bike course with lots of traffic and no shoulders wasn't great.

Volunteers and race directors were fabulous and did what they could given what the town would allow. They had the best prerace meeting I've ever attended with power point presentation.
