I'm planning to participate in my first sprint tri in Guelph on June 20th and am a little nervous.  Comparing my speeds/times I think there's a pretty good chance I'll come in dead last but that's okay.  I'm just there for the experience and to challenge myself.

Until now I've only participated in mini-tris which have been relatively flat.  Reading through last year's race reports - many people mention hills and I'm just curious about how big these hills are...?  Gentle rolling hills?  Something like you'd find at Keele & 16th Line?  Niagara escarpment hills?  Can anyone clarify?

Thanks in advance!

Sorry can't help on this one. I am also doing Guelph Lake but the Try a Tri (my first ever) so i am anxious to see what people say.  I assume they are rolling hills as one finds in the country - it's a bit away from the escarpment and it mostly farmland ... anyone out there who can correct me if I am completely wrong?

Best of luck!! :D

I'm hoping!!

I did a couple of mini sprints last year and had a great time.  Everyone is so supportive and helpful and the events were well planned for a beginner tri.  Good luck with yours!  Are you doing any other ones?  The Toronto Island one was fun - flat and fast.

I've raced it a few times and they are gentle/rolling, you will be fine.

The run is also rolling,

See you there.

I was thinking of doing the Toronto Island. The swim is my achilles so i just haven't worked up the confidence to register yet!

Are you excited to go to the sprint distance?

I can only speak for the Niagara escarpment hills as I live in Niagara. There are definately some challenging ones. Park hill in Grimsby is part of the Niagara tri and is extremely steep with several levels. Not to turn you off, just to encourage you to check them out before race day

Well I've never really been an athletic person let alone participate in events such as this so I'm always a bit nervous - praying my body doesn't let me down!!  But I find there's a rush you get afterwards -- a sense of accomplishment that can be addictive -- and it only seems to come with continually pushing yourself into doing something new and taking hold of that fear and using it to my advantage.  But ya - being the planner-type - I also like knowing what I'm entering in to :

I plan to participate in Toronto Island sprint this summer.  I did the try-a-tri last year and had a wonderful experience.  The water was warm, clear and calm and I actually did better than I thought I would (compared to stormy waves, rocky shores in the Niagara try-a-tri).  Stay calm and go at your own pace and you'll do fine (it wasn't all that deep which is nice to know while swimming it)

Keep in touch and let me know how it goes!  If you ever want to get together for a hilly weekend ride let me know!

Raced Guelph Lake quite a few times.....I would say "gently rolling hills" too and some bumpy spots......Have done Toronto Island too and I like the venue. I didn't particularly like the pedesrians walking, skateboarding so close beside the route but it was still a race I would do again.  Water was warmer than what I was expecting.  Enjoy your tri season!!!!!!

To add my 2 cents about Guelph - gentle, rolling hills on the bike is a fair description.  But on the run, there are some little hills you need to run up and down, and I found those tougher.  Just be prepared, as the run is anything but flat.  Good luck.

Yes can't forget those rolling hills during the run....and there's the hill from the water to the transition area which I have heard many say they could do without.....still like the course though....close to home, lots of great athletes and spectators.....each course has their pros and cons.  Good luck all whose doing GL1!  Tri season is almost upon us!!
