Subject: where is your water bottle?
i had my first 40 mile group ride last weekend and when i got home, i noticed my water bottle had a lot of dirt/dust/street grime on the outside on the lower half of it. right now it sits on on my down tube and my emergency pump sits on my seat tube. just a little concerned that the grime that hit the water bottle also got onto the opening where i put my mouth on. should i move my bottle to the seat tube or does it really matter? I just want to avoid sucking down that dirt with my energy drink.

Personally, I don't worry about it.  My water bottle goes on the down tube, too -- since I only have a 47cm bike, I can't really fit one on my seat tube.  I just remember the old saying that you have to eat a peck of dirt before you die.  Not that I want to eat more dirt, since according to that saying, it might help me die sooner, but sometimes dirt just ends up getting eaten.  If you're really germphobic, might you be able to get some sort of little cover for the top of the bottle?

or you could get the top-tube mounted bottle cap: http://mocoloco.com/archives/011362.php

Enjoy the dirt. I have 2 bottles, 1 on the down tube, 1 on the seat tube. I don't typically get much junk on my bottles, but worse case scenerio, squirt a little out, wipe it on your shirt and squirt drink into mouth. I can't image what it in the community pool who's water I drink.

Behind the seat on my XLab carrier.  I usually keep one spare bottle on the seat tube holder.  For long-long rides, I use my Aerodrink and 2 bottles behind the seat.  I prefer not to have to reach down into the frame while riding...I had a nasty wreck doing just that last year.

I agree - I'm not too worried about dirt on the bottle from road grime. Like the old saying goes, 'God made dirt, and dirt don't hurt...'  What worries me is what's in that mouthful of water I accidentally inhaled at the gym pool the other day. Oh man that was nasty...

Another option - you could always get some aerobars and a drink system for them!

I have one on my downtub and one on my seat tub and yeah, they will get dirty.  Especially when biking in the rain.  Dirt does the body good.

There are times when I get reminded that civilized, civilian, society is different from what I'm used to. This is one of them.

One on down tube and one on seat tube.  I don't worry about the little bit of grime that might get on the spout.

Or you could hang them off the handlebar like these guys. I don't think they worried too much about the grime though, or being aero, or having a proper recovery meal for that matter...

I've read that licking the chain before a race is good luck so a little dirt won't hurt you.  Besides, just think about all the stuff you get in your mouth from the swim.. heck, fish poop in that water.
