Total Time = 59m 33s
Overall Rank = 5/600
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 1/51
Pre-race routine:

Got up early and ate bagel, applesauce, boost drink, and a protein shake. Got my wife packed and my daughter into the car. My wife was racing despite have a chest virus on thurs and friday.
Event warmup:

Got to the site first, I am always the first there. Got a great transition spot right by bike in and out. They were letting the faster swimmers swim early in one lane so I opted to do that instead of waiting until 10 to go with my wave. I got in line and there were already 4 groups ahead of me. They all said they were fast. They were swimming 14 minute 500 yards. WTF!!! The race started right at 7 and my group left at 8. One hour for 16 people to swim? Any way. I know the guy that was second behind me at rattlesnake and got him to join our group of 4 swimmers. I knew he was faster than me in the pool so I had a rabbit on the rest of the race. So I ran for about 10 minutes and swam about 100 yards and got out and froze for awhile waiting to go off.

Comments:

I started 2nd behind my rabbit. Started strong but not anerobic. He passed me at 5 laps. Man was he fast. He almost lapped me again. I heard the whole pool cheer when he got out. He swims at parker rec center and a bunch of poeple know him. I had a lap and a half to go still. Last 100 I gave it all i had and kicked like a madman. The other to girls in the land never caught me.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, I had a good plan and i stuck with it.
Transition 1
  • 01m 51s
Comments:

Second fastest T2 we had to get out and run a least 200 yards to transition. So my swim time was real high in the posting because the run was added. I did my own splits on my watch and adjusted them. I could not get my feet in my shoes as they were on the bike. I have been having trouble with this lately. Maybe I should run with shoes on. I don't know?
What would you do differently?:

Get my feet in quicker.

Comments:

Got up to a good pace right away and started looking for my rabbit. I knew I had to catch him for he is a bit faster that me on the run. Passed lots of slow people and then saw my rabbit about 1/2 mile ahead just before my turn around. He saw me too. We stared right at each other as we passed on opposite sides of the road. Oops, went wide on the turn around into the gravel. Got out of the saddle and hammered to get back up to speed. Finally caught my rabbit at 10 miles. gave him a good job and went on. Looked back and he was still there. I hammered up the last hill and got out of my shoes ready to once again have the fastest T2 of everyone.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Transition 2
  • 00m 35s
Comments:

Got my goal of having the fastest T2 and was on the course running. Couldn't see my rabbit yet. Good get some distance on him.
What would you do differently?:

Nada
Run
  • 19m 44s
  • 3 miles
  • 06m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

Held bac just a tad and looked back at a turn. THere was my rabbit. I picked it up and kept a strong pace. I wanted to hit the turn around and pick up the pace. I saw my rabbit closer now at the turn around. He had gained on me. My plan was to sprint up every little incline and do a few speed pick ups to gain ground. It worked. He never caught me and I was only about 10 seconds slower than the rabbit on the run. He did not catch me and I beat him by 20 seconds. Later he said he couldn't figure out why he couldn't catch me. I then told him of my evil plan. He's a good guy and in my age group. He was happy to know I would be going up and age group next year.
What would you do differently?:

Not a thing!
Post race
Warm down:

Talked, walked around and ate some chipotle burritos and watched fro my wife to finish. She finished in 1:20 2 minutes better that last year. She was shooting for 1:15 but knew her illness would hold her back. She would have been 2nd in her age group with that time.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Faster people ahead of me.

Event comments:

Great race! I won my age group and was 2 freaking seconds out of being 4th. THe guy ahead of me has beaten me for years. He is 49 years old. I am gaining ground on him. The swim was a mess. People were still go off at 11:00 to swim. Awards took for ever! Lots of give aways, even a softride bike. No I didn't win it!

If you were chasing a rabbit the whole time and playing tricks on him, does that make you Elmer Fudd? Wascawy Wabbit! Congratulations on a great race and your 1st place in AG!! And on sticking to your plan too. That's gotta be a little tough mentally to stick to your guns when the guy's already beat you out of the swim, even though you planned/prepared for it. All mental toughness.

Good job. At least I was beat by a fellow BT'r. The hour delay in the swim really stunk. Good to hear your moving up in divisions next year. One less person to pass. No really, let me know if you ever want to train. I'm in Centennial/Littleton, near University and Arapahoe.

Again, good job.

Do we need to build you a display cabinet for all of your race hardware? Great race, Mark. Sounded like you had a plan and stuck to it. I would never have thought to do the speed on the hills--probably because that's where I die and go slower.   Congratulations. Last race before Worlds!!!

Excellent race. I didn't see your report and already posted this on another RR from the race.

It sucks you're gonna be in my AG next year. We'll have to hook up and train next year.

Fantastic RR and an even better race!!!  Congrats!

Thanks for the report too - yet another lesson in course management.  I'll be thinking about that topic until I can get another race in next year
