Minneapolis, Minnesota
United States
University of Minnesota
Total Time = 00m
Overall Rank = 17/47
Age Group = 30-39
Age Group Rank = 9/22
Pre-race routine:

got up around 8AM.. ate a clif bar (peanut butter) and coffee. Drank quite a bit of water yesterday (lots of hydration is good right)...
Event warmup:

sat and watched the 10:10 bt.com crew (kris, kelly, steve, and autumn). I watched until 11:10 or so .. and then got ready. Nora and I did the 11:55 wave.
Swim
  • 30m
  • 1725 yards
  • 01m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

I am a little stunned by my distance.. which I will confirm once the official distances are published (via the web site), but I did 34.5 laps in a 25 yard pool... so go figure. This is a huge pool by the way. Half was allocated to the actual race, other half had some college stuff going on from the looks of it. I was in Lane 4, moved from lane 10, which would have been quite tough as it was not as wide and on the very end (side of the wall).. so I am thankful someone didn't show up so I could get a 'normal' lane. I swam very well.. best I have ever swam I think in a race.... this was my FIRST indoor race. I didn't bother with any flipping at all... not good enough yet.. and they seem to just tire me out faster anyhow...
What would you do differently?:

push harder... lol... actually I did just right given my current aptitude
Transition 1
  • 00m 10s
Comments:

Standard 10 minute transition for this race.. T1 was NOT a competition ... I changed into biking atire and went upstairs where the precur bicycles are located.
Bike
  • 30m
  • 8.64 miles
  • 17.28 mile/hr
Comments:

dont exactly resemble an actual bike.. so my speed seemed a little slow to me... evenso, I kept it aroudn 5-6 most of the way with cadence around 105-110 the whole way. seems odd since even on a lifefitness stationary I do 10-11 mph.. I was a bit disappointed for this leg of the race.. Biking is currently my weakest leg.. I haven't actually dont hardly any biking this winter.. I wore my SPD clip ins..and padded bike jammers.
What would you do differently?:

train more on biking ... prior to any race.. this is mid-winter season race.. so my biking regimine is pretty low-priority
Transition 2
  • 10m
Comments:

Standard 10 minute T2, not a competitive aspect of this type of race. I changed into my runnign shoes and shorts...
Run
  • 30m
  • 3.64 miles
  • 08m 14s  min/mile
Comments:

Switched dredmills at about .28 .. wasn't used to these particular deadmills... felt like they were vibrating into my legs... so I switched and it was the same... weird feeling in the legs... anyhow , I do average for this leg.. wished I could have pushed harder and done under 8s... but maybe by this early sprint I will get there...
What would you do differently?:

last 2 minutes I cranked up to 8.0 and then 8.5 .. I'd like to have started my increase earlier to get just a little more into it... last 5 minutes were pretty grueling though...
Post race
Warm down:

cold turkey.. just stopped and got off... took a quick shower and stretched a little bit in the locker... went out with the bt.com crew (6 of us!) to lunch in dinky town.. it was pretty cool meeting fellow bt.comers...

What limited your ability to perform faster:

well.. the stupid stationary bikes are unusual. My running needs lots of work.. training 45+ miles this month should help.

Event comments:

Good race... the posting on the wall said 13.36 I think.. so not too shabby.. 15+ would be winning range... Pretty awsome pool facilities. Bikes sucked.. tredmills were strange. which I guess I was just not used to... Lots of winnings (bag, frisbee, t-shirt, pizza cutter, etc.)
I will likely do this again next year.

Good to met some fellow bt.com triathletes...  race was a lot of fun.    I did pretty good with what unofficially looks to be 13.36 miles.  The swim was my best leg.

Wow - you did awesome today. It was nice to have lunch with you and the other BTers. Not sure about the pool length, but the pool in general was awesome!

You ROCKED at the U!  It was great fun meeting you - and by the way, I am revising my superpower: I want to not get tired - EVER.  This would be way better than simply not having to sleep.  Being able to do that flip wouldn't be bad, either...

And the pool we swam in was definitely 25 yards.  They move the bulkhead to make it a 50 meter pool.  The other side of where we were is also currently at 25 yards.
