Hi Bn - The best tri shorts for me were from a local bike shop (The Bike Barn) but totally useless to you if you don't live here.  What I did for my first year of tri's was to go to our local bike shops and try on every style/ manufacturer of tri shorts.  I wanted a good pair but not the most expensive.  As I tried on each pair I liked some and disliked others.  In the end the most comfortable pair were a mid range price and 6 years later I'm on my 3rd pair.  They've been great for me and last August I rode 120km nonstop with them on then ran 30km off the bike.  I think I could wear them for a full IM if I were ever inclined to do one.  I also bought a pair from my coach and there is no padding whatsoever in them and they are comfortable for up to 2 hour rides without any comfort issues.  Go try some on and then use them a lot before your race (eventually it is nice to have two or three pairs).

Some references to some old threads on HIM training and racing (still relevant info though):

There is a lot of info in these threads.  Don't overthink your HIM just have fun.

For HIM distance triathlon, I find that you are looking for a suit or shorts with about 4mm of padding. This is enough padding to get you through 56 miles on the bike and won't significantly obstruct you during the run.

I can't for sure say what the "best" shorts are... I am sure you will find highly individualized opinions on this subject and, in the end, it comes down to what works best for you.

For many reasons, I personally gravitate towards De Soto Sport for all of my triathlon racing apparel. I bought my first pair (Forza Low-Cut 4mm) at the race expo before my very first HIM, Syracuse 70.3. I'll admit that probably was not the smartest decision (nothing new on race day!), but it worked out great and I have used the same pair of shorts for all of my HIM races (5) and all my long rides since then. Not the same model, the same pair! They are extremely comfortable, very durable (obviously), and Made in the USA.

You can check them out at https://www.desotosport.com/collections/mens-shorts-bibs

I would also recommend searching the sale section to pick up last years model at a discounted price.

Last year I raced LP 70.3 in Wattie Ink tri shorts and loved them.

I am out of the norm here, but for my first HIM I wanted the ultimate comfort for a 56 mi bike and a 13 mi run. So in T1 I changed into bike shorts and jersey and in T2 I changed into running shorts and tech tee. I didn't find it difficult to do this changing relative to being wet after swim. It might have cost me a minute or two do do all of this.

Not sure what I am going to do for my next HIM coming up in June.

It most likely cost you a couple of minutes, but if you were comfortable it was probably worth it. I was planning on doing the same thing when I was signed up for a full IM, but it got postponed an I ended up not racing...

Personally I like Pactimo gear. I'm not a fan of super spandexy type fabrics. Pactimo has the right blend, right grip strips and right fit for my long torso.

I'm a big DeSoto fan, they have a wide range of tri shorts with different types of pads, from thin fleece to thicker "Ceramico" pads (which I use as bike shorts, and yes you can comfortably run in them without feeling like you're wearing a diaper).  Spendy, but they last forever.

How did you manage that?  Porta potties?  I know the Ironman branded events have changing tents for the 140.6 distance but not the 70.3 distance.

I wear athletic underwear under my wetsuit, bike pants and run pants. I don't go totally commando when I change between them.
