Hi Euskaltel-Euskadi,

Welcome to the Tour De France Bike Challenge 2008.

The two things that stand out about this team are: they are Spanish and they are ORANGE.

Partly funded by the Basque government, this is the unofficial Basque team and all of the team riders were either born or grew up in the cycling culture of the Basque region of Spain.

In the 2007 edition of the Tour De France their rider Haimar Zubeldia placed 5th overall and returns to the line up again.

This team is traditionally a team built around strong mountain climbers and their goal is always to win when the roads go up towards their home region. They are also often successful during breakaways on the road.

On BT, your team line up for the challenge is:

1. amyro1234

2. Bbmoozer

3. erin116

4. gaiaserver

5. MDHillSlug

6. moondirt

7. pipscweek

8. swbkrun

9. velveeta

Now you have found the team thread, introduce yourself to your team mates below with some information which could include name, goals or info on your current bike(s).

Reporting for the challenge over the next three weeks will take place in three blocks matching the Tour De France racing days. The dates are as follows:

Week 1: 5th – 14th July

Week 2: 15th – 21 July

Week 3: 22 – 27 July

Your team has a tracking spreadsheet set up and active in google spreadsheet.

To open the spreadsheet click on this link: http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=pfYL7DR_dx-BogQq1hCEXEg&... />

To login to Google Docs:

Username: btchallenge

Password: challengeforum

You can update the spreadsheet at any time to track your own, and your teams progress. I will be grabbing each teams results to date and posting a challenge update that includes all of the teams progress and any interesting tid bits from the various team threads. This update will be posted at the end of the each reporting week listed above.

The winning team will be determined by the team with the highest percentage of goal achieved. No one can go over 100% of goal and if more than one team hits 100% then there is more than one winning team!

To remind everyone to post their updates, and I recommend that you nominate a team leader to help with reminding everyone to report in each week. But the job of inspiring and motivating your team mate really does rest with each individual so don’t forget to give everyone some regular encouragement here in the team thread and through inspires on training logs.

I will try to pop in regularly to see how your team is getting on. If there are any questions throughout the course of the challenge let me know, I will pop back in the next 24 hours with some additional information and rider profiles for your Tour De France team before the action kicks off on the roads of France.

Happy Pedaling

Cat

Hi,

I guess I'm first to introduce myself! This is my second season of triathlon. Last year I did two sprints, including an Iron Girl triathlon. This year I'm registered for three sprints, including a repeat of my first triathlon, coming up on the 20th of July. All of my rides this month will be shorter, so my goals are 10 stages and 150 miles. This includes a bike commute each week.

Looking forward to a great challenge with you!

Nicole

Hi! I'm Amy.

I've been in triathlons for a year now. I have done 1 super sprint (my first tri) and three sprints. I am looking to do an olympic this year. I am a strong swimmer, and an okay runner. The only thing that is holding me back is my bicyling.

I am REALLY slow (8 mph is my average speed)! I ride a Schwinn mountain bike. I am really looking to get faster on my bike, so thought this challenge would be the perfect one for me! My goal is 10 sessions for a total of 7 hours. Since this is a three week challenge, I made my goal shorter. My goal for the entire month is 11 hours of bicycling. I am really ready to start putting in the miles to get ready for the oly!

Good luck to everyone!

P.S. What is more important in this challenge: the number of sessions, or the total amount of time you spend on the bike? Are they equally important?

Hi Amy,

Your goal total is 50% stages completed and 50% time/distance completed.

Have you put slick tires onto your mountain bike? You'll notice an immediate speed increase if you do!

Hello all! I'm glad to be on a team with you! I'm Stacy, and I'm in the middle of training for my first HIM. I had my "A" running race last weekend, so I can back off the running and focus on CYCLING this month. I'm pretty new to cycling; I just bought my first "real" road bike last year (not counting the 10-speed I had in high school), and I'm just getting into doing longer distances and learning how to handle the bike on hills, busy roads, etc.

Go Team Orange! Sorry - that's easy for me to pronounce than our actual team name.

Hi Stacy,

Is that your bike in your avatar? What is it?

Yes, I think "Team Orange" is a good nickname for the team!

Yep, it's a Trek 1600 women-specific bike! I call her Blueberry (aka superbike, like a superfood).

Hi! Thanks for the info!
I don't have slicks yet, but am hoping to get some soon.

Hi Peeps...trying to copy and paste names to my log page and its taking me forever! (break time)

anyhow..I'm Sarah. Started tri-ing 2 years ago and love it. I had casually biked over the years and had swam swim team up til about 12 years old. But never ran...or never ran fast that is. It's been a wild ride and I've seen improvements in spite of being in my 40's.

Anyhow...got my first oly in August and after my sprint 2 weeks ago, I really need bike muscles! Ironically, I teach indoor cycling so long rides are key to my strength build.

Looking forward to this and I am not too sure how it all yet works but I'm in for 10 hours in 9 stages.

 Hello all..

My name is Steve, and I am training for Ironman Canada about 6 weeks away... July is going to be a big month for me, and I am hoping for 450 miles or so.... I will be on the trainer tomorrow morning @ 6am to watch the tour.... Then off to a wedding.... Then up @ 5am the next day to cheer on some family for the Lake Steven's 70.3 race....

But I hope to get the miles in...

PS--- The link that they put in to log things does not work for me... Anyone else have a problem?

Hi Team,

Just a reminder that when talking about events in the actual Tour De France there is a 24 hour ban on posting about recent action from the French roads in either your own team thread or other teams. This is because a lot of people have to work while the live coverage is on which means they do not get the chance to catch up on what is happening in the roads of France until later in the day.

If you do want to chat about the event in France there is a Tour De France forum located here: http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/forum-view.asp?fid=122#s for the duration of the event.

Otherwise Im usually hanging out in beginner chat whenever I have live stage coverage as well... and always happy to chat Tour with ANYONE and EVERYONE!

Hi everyone!

I'm Kendra and this is my 2nd full season of tris.  As I cannot run right now, my focus is building my bike miles.  I have my first HIM at the end of the season and am getting a bit nervous.

I only work a few days a week and am not online that often, so if you don't hear from me for a bit, I promise I haven't disappeared.

Oh, I like Team Orange! Burnt Orange was my college's color (go Longhorns!) so this suits me well

I'll introduce myself. I'm Erin, I'm in my first/second season of tris. I did one sprint at the very end of last year and have done a few races this year. I'm training for my first HIM and am terrified! So, a biking challenge is a good hing for me right now. I wanted to set higher goals, but I have a sprint next weekend and am going out of town one weekend, so I couldn't set the goals as high as I wanted.

I'm glad to meet you all, Go Team Orange!

Glad you liked! I moved them down because it was too busy and I couldn't read them when they were at the top of the picture. I found some other cool pictures I liked better but I wasn't good enough with HTML to get them to work as the background.

And hey folks... here's a link about the meaning of the color orange - we be good!
