Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am in my 8th week of training for first sprint tri, 250 swim, 9 mile bike and 5k run. I have been getting coaching from a swim coach who is my good friend and neighbor, the swim is coming along good as is bike and run, so we are biking the other day i do 30 miles with him on a sunday, we meet some other bikers and they suggest i come along on a organized bike ride it is hilly ,but, its a 20 mile ride i say OK and he says no she will slow you down she is not ready, then ha asked when my tri was and i say just over 2 weeks to this he replys you think your ready tri's are hard you know. for the record to date these are my times. swim, 6mins, bike 38mins, and run 24mins. anyway i love him dearly, but........... |

![]() | ![]() *shrug* If there is a very big gap between the ability level of you and the riders who invited you it may not have been very fun. I wouldn't want to join a group of riders who are just going to leave me in the dust from the start and I wouldn't want them to have to wait or completely change their workout because I'm at a completely different fitness level. Just trying to play devils advocate here but I think your friend was just looking out for you... Edited by Synon 2009-07-21 2:52 PM |

I'd be kind of taken aback if someone said that about me and in front of me. But I've also been accused of being overly sensitive and of taking things too personally. Two years ago I would have said "you're right, I will slow you down. Have fun." But today I would probably say "Give me the route so I can get back on my own if I get dropped. Sounds fun!"

Just trying to play devils advocate here but I think your friend was just looking out for you... Agreed. He probably knew they were over your skill set. But he could have done it in a nicer way. They way it was said was pretty rude. Gosh, I got sh@t the other week from a guy who has ridden with me for years. He was basically saying a group I have kept up with, would be too fast and I needed to go with the slower group. Mind you, I did get dropped that day, but they don't always drop me. And I don't mind getting dropped on this ride, since I know the route. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I think there are Two questions here. 1 - Should he have suggested you not go on the group bike ride as he did? 2 - Should he have doubted your preparation for the tri? The first he may have been right, someone would have been disappointed. The answer to the second depends upon your goals. I am no veteran, but your run time seems more advanced than your swim and bike time. IMHO 2 min 24 sec 100's 14 mph 8 min mile |

I can't keep up with a group and I keep 20+. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Seems weird to me that he'd answer for you when you're a grown up who can decide for yourself. Maybe you get dropped but they did ask you directly, did they not? I dunno maybe i read it differently - sounds like there's some protective/jealousy thing. Lots of people figure out the different parts of tri by testing it out with a group - live and learn or getting a few coaching sessions and then swimming on their own. I wasn't there - i don't know. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am new to swimming, this why i am slower in this area. I also knew he was looking out for me, thats why i just let it go.. as i said before just needed a vent. |

![]() I can maybe understand why he thought you should not go on the ride. That is for the group to decide though. You don't get better on the sidelines. |

I don't know, maybe he was protecting you but that was a totally a$$ way of doing it. Why couldn't he have just pulled you aside and quietly suggested you weren't quite ready for group riding? Why announce it to the whole group? And why in the world would he make that comment about your readiness for the tri? You sound very ready to me! |

I can't keep up with a group and I keep 20+. meh - depends on terrain and the type of group. Most of the group rides run by our local bike club are in the 14 - 16 mph range (and many are slower than that), but we have a lot of hilly terrain, traffic stops, etc. More "elite" groups would certainly be faster, though. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I agree that you probably should not have gone on that group ride, but as your tri coach, questioning your race readiness was not very nice. If you can ride 30, you'll be able to do the 9 in the race. |
