1. IMFL in particular, how long after the race can your stuff remain in the transition area (i.e., bike and special need bags) ? 3 AM ? 24 hours later ?

2. After the race, is there a separate place where you pick up your special needs run, special needs bike bag, and transition bags or are they just there in one big lump ? How soon can you get those back ? Right after you cross the finish line or the next day ?

If I remember right they wanted everything out of transition by midnight at IMWI.  Special needs bags were available thge next day and were lumped together in big boxes by bib #'s.

do not count on getting your SN bags back. They usually dump them somewhere, in no particular order and you have to sort thru them. Of course, there are folks that go 'shopping' thru them them as well.

I have done IMFL twice.  You need to get your stuff out of transition that night.  You will get your T1 and T2 bags back and I think that is pretty easy but I have had someone do that for me both times.  you will NOT get your SN bags back.  I have helped friends at other IM races and they have gotten them back but the bike ones at IMFL I think they just dump.  IF you have friends at the turn around for teh run you can hand off your run SN bag alhough I am told its a USAT rules violation.  (unauthorized outside assistance of an athlete)  I am in no danger of winning my age group or kona qualifying so whatever.  Apparently if you drop your stuff at the feet of your friends its considered abandonment of equipment (which might be another rules viiolation) but then they can pick it up off the ground.  If you HAND it to them its a violation.  really stupid esp when you are given no opp to get the stuff back but I don't write the rules.  (I have a freind who is a USAT official)

I got my bike special needs bike back the next morning in '07.  Not a problem at all.  Found it pretty quick as they had them in big cardboard boxes by numbers.  I did not use a run one.

What about those of us who may be crossing the finishline right around midnight?  How are we suppose to get our bikes and bags back?

I did FL in 2008 and special needs bags were in numbered cardboard boxes in the corner of what had been transition area the next morning. They went into dumpsters later in the day I think.

They give you a little piece of paper to fill out that will allow someone else to pick up your bike and such.  So you can have them do it if you don't feel like walking over after crossing the line and getting it yourself.  Theoretically you could cross the line, get your finisher's schwag, take your picture, turn around in the parking lot/drop off at the host hotel and walk the 150 yards to transition and get your stuff.  Shouldn't be an issue really.

I got my SN bags back as well in '06.  Only catch is that you have to wake up REALLY early the next morning and it takes awhile to sort through all of them.  But I did get mine back.

I gave my bike ticket to a friend so she could retrieve my bike while I ran.  That worked out SUPER well.  Then all I had to do was get the two transition bags before going home.  As I recall I just walked up to the transition area and they retrieved them for me.

Next morning while I shopped finishers gear my friend went and tracked down my SN bags.  I think as others have said they were in a big bin.  I just told her my number and she took care of it so I never actually saw how it worked.  It pays to have an excellent race sherpa.

Memory is fading me, but maybe they said you had to get your stuff out of transition before midnight or you wouldn't be able to get it until the next day?  I went looking for my stuff shortly after 11 and they were JUST starting to move all the bags from rows to bins...so it took a few extra minutes to find it.  Definitely would have been a bit harder in the bins the next day.  Bottom line though, I highly doubt they will pitch your stuff if you don't get it by midnight.  If you want to wait until the next day I think you can.

X2 at IMCDA this year.  Got both SN bags back in less than 2 minutes as they were in numbered cardboard boxes.

I did IMFL last year, and I got back all of my bags. I picked up my bike, transition, and run special needs bags after I finished, and then the next morning, I picked up my special needs bike bag. No issues at all. Bags were sorted by bib number in big cardboard boxes. Easy-peasy. I think there was some note about having to get your stuff by a specific time, though. Personally, I was still jazzed up from the race, so woke up early the next day anyway.
