Hello everyone!

I decided recently to do my first triathlon. I'm a bit pathetic and rag-tag (no bike yet and shin splints have sidelined my running for now), but dedicated. I've even convinced my sister to do it with me! We've decided to do a sprint in Windsor, CO in early September. I set up a blog, mostly as a training journal for myself, but I also would appreciate comments. So if you're interested, it's at kimsfirsttri.blogspot.com.

If anyone has any shin splint tips (yes, I have good shoes, was running on grass, no more than 10% increase every other week) or how to get a bike for reeeeeaaaalll cheap (we're talking under $300), I'd love to hear them! And I always appreciate completely random advice as well!

I'll see y'all around!

-Kim

Shin Splints suck. But one of my favorite remedies is to freeze water in little dixie cups and then have my husband rub them hard on my shins.
I also like to soak in epsom salt - though I don't have any clue as to why this helps - but it sure is relaxing.

Walk backwards or run backwards - I used to have really bad chronic shin splints in High School and this is what my PT had me do - it really worked.

Good luck!

Welcome aboard.

Good luck with your training adn just listen to your body when you're dealing with your shin splints. Also, I too must sing the praises of Epsom salt. I broke my toe several weeks ago. Someone recommended Epson salt and I scoffed at the idea. However, after soaking by foot one time, it was like a miracle. I don't know how it works, but I swear it does.

Good luck,
Scott

Welcome!  As far as shin splints, I massage the heck out of them - hurts like crazy, but it does the job.  As far as bikes, look in the paper for used bikes or at your local bike shop for signs people might post of bikes for sale.  Good luck!

Hi! Welcome!!! Welcome!!

I bought an old Trek 1000 from a guy at work that used to do triathlons with his ex wife before they got divorced. He was looking to unload this painful memory of his past life, so I bought it from him for $150.00. It's not glamorous, but he is about my size so the bike fits, and works. I added some aerobars and toe clips. I'm not to the "clipless pedal" level yet. Poke around at work, check the newspapers... the bike doesn't have to be fancy... If you've got a mountain bike, you can use that instead. I did my first two races on my mountain bike.

Good Luck with those shin splints! Hope you find a suitable bike...

Welcome!

I picked up my first road bike at a yard sale for almost nothing (that's about what is was worth) but it got me started, and I when I tacoed the front tire in a wreck it was not a big loss. Also give E-bay a try.

Thank you all for the warm welcome and advice! I'm going to buy some special inserts for my shoes tonight to see if that helps with the shin splints (I have flat feet and feel that may be the issue). But I will certainly be running backwards, massaging, icing, epsom salt bathing also!

I'm sure I'll "see" you around!

about your shoes, u mention that they are good running shoes...that doesnt matter, what matter is were they fittted for you?  make sure of that.  i have extremely flat feet and although i must where inserts for walking or i go lame, the person (cross country coach) that fitted me said that the right running shoe (for most) will not require special orthotics....sounds weird and i can explain later...

just want to check that your shoes were fitted by a qualified professional of a real running store.

Well, I actually learned more about that last night. I went to my local quality running store to get the inserts (the same place where I got these shoes). And, well, I do have the wrong shoes, but I can understand where the guy who sold me these made the mistake. After having every clerk in the store watch me walk around in my stocking feet, they came to the consensus that I pronate with my left foot and supinate with my right. I have no idea how I got so cockeyed, but alas, I am. So I have shoes for folks who pronate and probably need neutral shoes.

But here's the weird thing, the shin splints are primarily in my left leg right now and I have the right shoe for my left foot. So it's all the more confusing. In any case, I'm going to start icing twice a day and taking 2 ibuprofen 3x's a day, continuing to stretch a lot, and just focus on biking and swimming for the next week or so. Hopefully that'll help!

If you have any more thoughts about this, I'd love to hear them!
