I was going to stop, but there were plenty of other people already on scene.

This is the very reason why I bought this camera.  It is also the reason I don't like riding near roads...even with a bike lane

Not to change the subject or minimize the situation, but what kind of camera setup do you have in your car?  Do you film every drive?  For any particular reason?

you bought a camera to film accidents and suffering?  i am not even clicking on the link because i prefer NOT to see a child hit by a car...let alone record it.

Sorry if I wasn't more clear.  The camera is one that I use as a helmet camera for on my rides so that if anything were to happen to me there is video proof of what happened for my wife and kids.  I'm not just some dude that popped into a triathlon forum.  I am out training frequently and I deal with these safety issues on every ride in our area.  I have the camera to document the messed up things cyclists have to put up with in my area, such as this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G11Ex1QoT-M&feature=g-upl

By "this is why I have a camera", I meant "If somebody were to hit me, I would want it on video to show police."...not "I like to keep carnage videotapes in the basement with all of the cut up body parts".

So no...I am not some wierd voyeur that craves videotaping people in misery, as it was suggested.  In fact, the video isn't of the accident.  It is the aftermath.  The kid ended up ok...(I believe that is him standing near the fire hydrant missing a shoe) But the video shows his bike clearly in the bike lane.

Yeah, pretty clear what you were doing there. Good idea. Really good idea. Never thought of a helmet cam being used that way. Do you upload everything or just plan on doing when something interesting happens?

Regarding the kid vs car. So many people have so little respect for the cars they drive and that it is how they drive that makes the car such a weapon.

Think I will take the paths all the way home today.

Im just uploading anything of interest.  Otherwise it will be a lot of pretty boring drive videos with a radio soundtrack and me coughing or thinking outloud occassionally.

I have a dash cam in my cars, with 8g memory that loops forever. Insurance and evidence since no-one stops any more.

It's getting a lot more common now that they're cheap (60 bucks or so all in)

Here's a bike/lawnmower/cart thing that drives around our area:

I would never mount a dash cam... too much self incriminating evidence. And off key singing.

The helmet cam isn't a bad idea but it's still going to miss drivers coming up behind you to pass, which is a common hazard.

What I find odd is that on a single lane road, drivers usually make a legal pass.  But in a double lane they don't bother changing lanes and try to slide past you in the same lane.  I don't get it.

Drifting off-topic, I also think many drivers are unaware of the hazard of sewer grates.  So they get all grouchy when we're not riding perfectly in the far right portion of the lane.  I wish I could take every driver out on a bike commute sometimes... give some perspective

You hit on two of my biggies. There are a couple of double lane roads I ride regularly and it boggles my mind that people don't just move into the left lane when they see a cyclist ahead. No other traffic, just me and the car, and the guy just has to squeeze past me.

As for the grates and debris and such, I was riding just last night, keeping far right on a busy suburban road at rush hour, but had to move slightly left a few times for grates and debris and manhole covers and I wondered if the drivers realized that or they just thought I couldn't hold my line.

I'm confused about a couple fo your compilation videos.

In one, you mention a car usign the bike lane.  A car does pull out but then you pass them on the right.

In another you mention a car not paying attention to cyclists.  It looks like you are about to pass on the right and then the car turns right.

In both instances, please follow the rules of the road.  If you were in a car, you would not have passed the vehicle in front of you in either situation.

There is really one main law I follow on my bike and it has not failed me in over 40 years:  In a bike/car collision, the car wins 100% of the time regardless of who was right.

In other words, the cyclist will always receive injuries or have a damaged bike.  I would rather be delayed a few seconds rather than become a statistic.
