Subject: 2nd year cheaper than first?
I've been wondering... after spending mucho dinero for a year (new bike, bike parts for new bike, trisuit, 5 races, clothes, blah blah blah), has anybody noticed if the second year is any cheaper?

2009 seasons costs so far include 1 ironman, so that was kinda pricey! I'll be doing less races than 2008, and therefore will be going to less hotels and the such.

I won't be buying *as much* clothes as last year as I don't plan on losing/gaining weight. I will definitley not be buying another bike in 2009, but probably maintenance items (tubes, tires, chain, new pump soon to come). I'm sure there will be new running shoes, as my current shoes have many miles on them, along with ditching my road cycling shoes and going with tri shoes. I'll also be spending some $ on a vo2 and LT test. I've already purchased a wetsuit, so that is out of the picture too! Of course there are the costs of a gym membership, but that'll be cheaper from where I last went, and the cost of more food, GUs, clif bars, etc.

So, any veterans/folks with more than 1 year agree/disagree?

I did my first year on the cheap, using my trusty old Schwinn 10-speed with toe clips and just buying a bike helmet and a pair of inexpensive tri-shorts.

My second year was the most expensive when I sprung for a new bike, clipless pedals, aerobars, bike clothes, etc.

I still spend a significant amount on an annual basis including shoes, clothes, race wheels, bike parts, coaching, etc.

No reason it can't be cheaper.  Every season can be inexpensive if you stick to smaller local races that don't require travel and you use the same equipment you've already been using to train on all year round.

As you get on in the scene, it is the race entry fees and travel that add up more than equipment.  For someone doing an official IM event you can easily spend as much as a new bike on just that one event.  Which is why a lot of people turn those events into family vacations!!

Good question.

I would agree that your 2nd year should be less expensive just for the fact that the most expensive items are already bought (e.g., bike, wet suit).  My 3rd year (this season) was more expensive because I bought a year-end 2008 Felt B2 Pro.

For next year, I  plan to invest in more coaching sessions and buy a power meter and learn to use it over the winter.  Coaches and Power are not cheap and I plan on $2,000 or so.

 Here's a link from a while back.

Wake up Kev, you're dreaming again...

Bike and wetsuit are probably the biggest (one-time) expenses, but LT/VO2 testing (and re-testing) and coaching may cost you more than the wetsuit over the year.

While I agree that you can have an inexpensive second year, if you choose to, you can also spend more if you want to go beyond the basics. As Gritty mentions, coaching and power are some further expenses. There are also things like compu-trainers, swim toys and coaching, single sport or all-around tri training camps, GPS systems for running or biking, endless pools, etc. After the basics, none of this is strictly necessary to participate but there are many more places to spend money if you have it to burn.

Dang it, that's not what I wanted to hear :-]

Well, no coaching for this year, just the LT/VO2 testing, which I'm having a hard time trying to figure out where to go! I've been trying to get ahold of the cardiac area at Proctor hospital, but haven't had much luck. I've tried to contact Bradley University, but so far no such luck.

This is my 3rd season and all of my big ticket items are out of the way I think (bike, wetsuit, indoor trainer). The kicker for me is that the more I train, the more I want to race. Which means entry fees and hotels. Only 1 local tri around my parts. So it's actually getting more expensive for me.

My first year was cheaper. I added aero bars to old road bike and bought tri shorts. Once I realized I was hooked, started this year (2nd year) with new bike, new bike shoes, new wet suit, new helmet and trisuit. Added OLYs to local sprints, so in my case 2nd year was more expensive.

Some of the local triathletes have done the testing, but unless you know what to do with the information, why do the testing?  (That's why I figured you'd probably want to look at some personalized coaching.

I was thinking that with a little research, I could use the numbers I gather from the test(s) to get exactly what heart rate I need to train at for zone 1,2,3, etc... and to figure out my nutrition down to a 'T'.

On that note, are there any good coaches in town?

I think it should be cheaper unless the addiction REALLY grabs hold and a serious upgrade on the bike is *necessary*, the wetsuit isn't fast enough, and for the non-wetsuit races, the need to get a fast one piece racing suit is felt justifiable.....I've been to the races and find myself drooling looking at some of the bikes....sweeeet.

Fortunately for me, I love the training and racing but am grounded quickly when I realize the $$$ just isn't there for toys...
First year: No new bike. I ride a 7 yo road bike with aero bars purchased between my first 2 races. Cateye computer. All of the stuff for flats, meds, water bottles...that go on bike.
$105 for a sleeveless wetsuit. $275 on a KK Trainer. $40 on a pair of tri shorts. $15 on the shirt. $85 for running shoes x2....and bucket-loads of gels/accelerade....

My only planned expenditures for '09: Accelerade/ gels (which btw, I use far less of now than when I first started training) New tri shorts, shoes...so $250 plus the drinks/gels....then entry fees and hotels. So yes, my 2nd year will be cheaper.
