Mississippi Track Club
68F / 20C
Overcast
Total Time = 2h 20m 18s
Overall Rank = 505/975
Age Group = 24-29
Age Group Rank = 46/61
Pre-race routine:

Hot shower to loosen up. Few sips of gatorade. Drive in, park, go to the line.
Event warmup:

A quick jog and a late trip to the porta potty. Heard the national anthem (guitar solo) from the john.
Run
  • 2h 20m 18s
  • 13.11 miles
  • 10m 42s  min/mile
Comments:

I kept it slow through the first 7, then figured I'd go out and truly put in a best effort 10k to the finish. I knew the hills only got tougher, but I thought I had saved enough. I was wrong. It was ridiculously humid and in the high 60s today, and it sapped me. By mile 11 I was cooked and my pace was near a crawl.
What would you do differently?:

Run the race the weather gave me. I had trained in 30-40 degree temps, so today was a shock. However, I live in Mississippi so I knew better and should have respected the conditions more.
Post race
Warm down:

Beer, pizza, whining about how tough it was out there.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The weather and me letting my weight get back up to 10-15 pounds over my ideal race weight.

Event comments:

Despite the weather, this race has done a fantastic job in the two years they have held it. The threat of storms kept the musicians off the course, so that was a bummer, but understandable. It's just a really well organized and fun event with a really tough course that happened to have a double whammy of some major humidity today.

That's really tough that the weather suddenly put on a hot day, but nice work getting through it!

Are you claiming that eating your weight in sweets a few days before a race is not the preparation of champions?

Nice work to get the year off to a decent start.

aww come on bro you know that mississippi weather goes from cold to hot to cold to hot with 100% humidity in the winter.  Congrats on finishing the race though it stinks that the musicians couldn't play

Training in 30-40 degre weather and having it 60 degrees with humidity race day makes a rough day.  Great job out there.

Sorry for no music, it always makes the race more fun with bands out there.

Congratulations.  Hills and humidity definitely suck but at least you were prepared for the hills!  Great job.
