Subject: Cracked Helmet

So I took a spill last week and there are 2 cracks (1" in length for both, 3 inches apart but full depth of the shell at the perimeter) in the helmet now but the helmet still appears to have its integrity in place if I were to fall again.  My question is this, would a race official still let me use this helmet in a race?  I have a HIM coming up and do not want this to be an issue.  If it is I will just buck up and buy a new one.  Thanks!

Ryan

You should get a new helmet.

It's a no-brainer, pardon the pun.

While they may not notice the cracks and let you race anyway...

HELMETS ARE DESIGNED FOR ONE TIME USE!  IF THERE ARE ANY CRACKS OR DAMAGE AT ALL YOU NEED TO GET A NEW HELMET.  USE OF A DAMAGED HELMET IS DANGEROUS.

I'd use stronger words, but I don't want to get banned from the forums.

Stop being cheap and buy a new one.  The shell is cracked all the way thru, it DOES NOT still have it's integrity.  (I've never had a race official check my helmet, but I would not ride with a cracked one).

Check wih the manufacturer about a replacement--some companies will give you a free or discounted helmet if you send in your old one with a description of the crash/impact, etc.

I second contacting the manufacturer or even talk to the shop.  Bell offered me a discount on a new helmet when I fell.  (My bike shop also offered me the same discount.)

Don't wear it.  It's not worth taking the chance.  (I had the same quandary 3 weeks ago.)

Just to make the opinion official, here's the USAT rule (my emphasis added):

5.9 Helmets.

(a) Type of Helmet. All participants shall wear a protective head cover, undamaged and unaltered, which meets or exceeds the safety standards of the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).  Helmets manufactured prior to March 10, 1999 must meet or exceed the safety standards of (i) the American National Standard Institute (ANSI Z-90.4), (ii) The Snell Memorial Foundation (Protective Headgear for Bicycle Users), or (iii) ASTM F-1446 or F-1447, and which is clearly labeled by the manufacturer as satisfying such standards. Removal of helmet cover, if required for that helmet to meet such safety standards, shall constitute an impermissible alteration in violation of this Section 5.9(a). Any violation of this Section 5.9(a) shall result in disqualification.

If you think your brains are not worth the $50 of so to replace a helmet, you are probably correct!

Seriously - look at the helmet.  That's where the skull fracture would have been without a helmet.  And the helmet is now no longer trustworthy to protect you from another hit. Don't even go training with the old helmet.  Cut off the straps, and give it to your LBS, or local police for safety talks about why wearing a helmet matters.
