Regular![]() ![]() | ![]() As I've mentioned before. I started training about a week and a half ago for a mini. This is the first exercise that I've done in 8 years other than walking. I did some triathlons 8 years ago, was a great runner and swimmer before that. |

![]() | ![]() I'm guessing you're doing too much too soon and your body is telling you. BUT, that being said, you will find a groove and this will be fun. I think getting to the pool will help to balance your workouts for sure. |

Royal(PITA) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() For someone who hasn't done much in the past few years you asked a lot out of your body the first week. What are the distances for your mini? Remember the 10% rule for adding run mileage? You went from 0 miles to 12 miles in one week. That's a lot to put on the body. Go easy coming back. Hope you find the pool situation settled out soon. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You're off to a great start! Your goal at this time is to go easy enough and short enough that you want to do another workout tomorrow. If that means taking a rest day because you haven't gone easy enough or short enough, don't sweat it too badly. To put things in perspective, my first "workout" was a whole 15-minutes on an elliptical trainer, and I thought I'd started easy enough to comfortably complete it. My tongue was hanging out, I was gassed, and I barely made it through 15 minutes, but I got on the next day, and the day after that I went 16 minutes. On the 4th day, I jumped all the way to 18 minutes, but backed way down on the intensity so I could complete that monster workout. Edited by McFuzz 2009-07-03 2:31 PM |

Regular![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks for the responses so far. The mini is a 250m swim, 7 mile bike, and a 2 mile run. It's on September 12th so plenty of time to get in shape. I just want to be there now I really appreciate it. I think having a event to train for is going to be good for me. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() What you're doing is awesome! Just want to encourage you to ease back to into running with a run/walk combo. Usually lets people up their time running pretty safely and in a way to build up slowly! You sound like you can do it - i think the couch to 5k programs do this. The local running specialty store starts with 2 mins walking, 1 running over 20mins and then builds up to 10 mins run, 1 walk - FWIW Great work - glad to hear you're back into it! |

Regular![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks Jen. I appreciate the encouragement. It's hard because I used to be able to run 10 miles without a problem and now I'm struggling. I'm just trying to think of all the good times I had running before which really had nothing to do with distance or speed. I'm not wearing a stop watch at this point at all but I'm hoping to get one soon and then I will run some place where I don't know the mile markers so well....probably in a field. |

Slowly build your endurance and in a few weeks you'll be surprised how far you've come. You're memory of being able to run 10 miles is probably making you push too hard, too fast. You'll get there, just don't rush it. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() We started out 1 minute run, 2 minutes walk, 2 years ago. Still remember the first full mile the GF and I ran in one shot. Keep it up and you will find what you need to do. |

Regular![]() ![]() | ![]() Thanks so much for the support. It is making me feel better. I finished my second week of a 12 mile total so I think that is just where my body is right now. I have to do all of my training runs off road due to an old injury and I'm sure that helps me be able to run a little further as running off road seems to prevent a lot of injuries.
