Headlight for running

I got a Princeton Tec "Eos" as a gift a couple years back and I love it.  I've used it for running a couple times, but more often for setting up transition at early or late season tri's.  Not the cheapest, but we learned a lesson when we bought a cheap headlamp for my wife to use on runs and it broke on her second use.

Why are you using it? To see or be seen? If I am just using it to be seen, I buy a cheap on that clips on to a hat and throw that on and turn it on. I am not worried about seeing where I am going most of the time, so I usually will go the cheap route.

I run a local trail system in the winter, it's pitch black out. Of the 10 miles I usually do, 7 of them are on the trail without any artificial light source. I used to run with a smallish LED bike light, one of the ones that take 3 AAAs. It was ok. I switched over to a Light and Motion 200L this last Fall and was super happy with it.

When I use it for running, I hold the battery pack in one hand a the light/lamp in the other. You get used to this very quickly. Having a light that also doubles as my winter bike commute is nice. That light is pretty powerful. You could do the 120 for running and be super happy with the output. If you are running with some street lights and some light out there, the 200L or 120 might be overkill and are not headlamps.

check out petzl.com.  they make a wide variety of headlamps.  Been using them for years alpine climbing and such...

Mine is made by Black Diamond. I got it at an outdoor/hiking type of store.

I use one I got from REI for about $12 bucks. Super bright, 3 steady bright settings and 1 flash setting (more for being seen than seeing). I used it when I was living in Scotland because it got dark at 3 pm and I usually couldn't get to my run until at least 5. Helped a lot, even if I looked a bit like a nutter. Used it on the bike too, just strapped around my helmet.

my crazy husband gets up almost every morning at 4am, and runs with Petzl headlamp, reflective vest and a red blinking light clipped on his shorts in the back.

I also have this get up and use it in the Fall after I go back to teaching and need to get in my early morning runs for my Fall marathon. 

You really need to be visible out there on the roads especially just as the sun is coming up.

My 10 year old thought they were "PRETZELs" that we were putting on.

I've used one in the winter.  It works fine.  Go to any decent outdoors shop and you'll see a huge selection.  Those at the tippy top end of the scale are not necessary (for this application) but don't get the cheapest clunker either.  Just a decent LED one is fine.
