Subject: Riding inside during the summer

I see a lot of people talking about riding their indoor trainers or computrainers during the winter because of the cold and the shorter days.  I on the other hand live in the desert where during this last summer the high would get up to 117 degrees.  At 11pm at night the temperature would still be in the upper 90s.  Riding in the morning is not a real option for me mainly during the weekdays.  Riding in the evenings when it is a little cooler could work, but there is no real safe place to ride, and because of where I live people are not really aware of cyclists because there are not that many out here.

I'm thinking about doing IMFL in 2011.  Do you think it would be silly of me to train on the bike during the summer, or should I just suck it up and go ride out in the heat?  Let me add that I hate the heat, I would take the cold on a second.

I trained for my second tri mostly on the trainer b/c it was an early season race. Also because I felt I had no safe place to ride, no time of day to do it, etc. While my endurance was great, my handling and climbing made me one of the slower cyclists on the course. I learned that day while trainer rides certainly have their place, nothing compares to time spent outside, doing what you're really going to be doing.
That being said, 117 is really hot. You might melt.

I say go with the trainer.  Check out this article on Peter Reid.  When he moved from chilly Canada to beautiful San Diego he found himself on the trainer a whole lot more.

Lets play house swap and trade homes for about a year.  33 degrees here right now and dropping!  Regardless, I do most of my training indoors.  Safer that way.

Use trainer all the time in the summer.  Dont like it, but often have to.  Rain? Ride inside.  Time?  I feel I get a better hard workout in on the trainer in limited time than on the road...no stopping, no coasting, etc.  Still, its no substitue for outside, espcially heat, wind, hills, etc.  Its good for what it is though.

2 of the top-rated pro elite triathletes form the US do 95% of their bike training on a computrainer. Nuff said.

I trained in up to around 100 F for 6 hour bike rides this summer.  As it gets hotter than that I would have to consider whether to go inside or not.  If you can hit a couple hours in mid 90's during the week that should be fine.  You just need to watch your fluids and electrolytes.  It is a really tough choice between hot weather and a 6 hour trainer ride 8).

But I think there is a difference between training on a Computrainer VS using a regular trainer no?

Not really. In the interviews I read, neither of them used the entertainment features of the Computrainer - they set it on the graphs of power/HR, and pedaled away. No virtual stuff, no virtual racing.

I would check to see what the average temps are in November in Florida, though, so you are prepared to actually do the race outside.  Certainly it's not in the 100s on average, but I've been to Florida in November and it's pretty darn hot.

I know it's hard to comprehend biking on a workday morning, but maybe just give it a try.  Get up an hour earlier on those days, ride to work, etc.  It might be possible.

I would think so...now since you can virtually race many courses that are out there. If I had a computrainer, I'd ride the heck out of it during the winter. I've just got a Fluid 2, so I guess I'll have to give that a go. I am reading be IRON fit right now and one of the things mentioned in the book is to not look over the indoor training rides...good for developing spinning correctly.

I see no reason why you wouldn't do a lot of your work indoor during the summer... not really much a difference from us northerners that has to deal with winter and snow...

Just make sure you do get some outdoor riding time. Maybe try to head out super early on a weekend or something (thinking 4am... get some good lights!).

I did a good bit of my IM training on a trainer, because I ended up (unexpectedly) being a single dad (temporarily -- wife went off for training) during my IM training.  I got a sitter (aka my Mom) for my long rides, and I do think that getting the long rides in outdoors was important (for me).  But the rest was on the trainer or rollers.

ETA:  The run is a different story.  How do you plan to handle yourlong runs?
