New user 15 | Subject: I have a few simple questions I will be competing in my first mini triathlon and have some questions. 1)Do you wear a hat during the running? 2)Do you eat and/or drink during the biking or just the running? 3)I have had some fog issues with my goggles so I bout Speedo's anti-fog solution. I sprayed and wiped the inside lenses with a tissue but still had them fog up. Should I not wipe the goggles and let the solution dry? Thanks!

Extreme Veteran 422 | Subject: RE: I have a few simple questions 1) if your more comfortable with a hat wear one if not don't. What ever makes you feel better 2) How long is the race? if its just a sprint distance (half mile swim, 12 mile bike, 3 mile run) I would go without anything on the bike. Im a Back of pack and will do that in under 2 hours I don't need food or drink (there is water on the run). But what have you been doing if you want food take it, if you want drink take it. 3)Can't help you on that one. Its your first race, the idea is to have fun and finish, do what will make it fun for you and help you finish. Good luck |

I have and have not weather dependent - if it is hot/sunny I do but else not. So mostly yes. In addition to protecting you from the sun, light colored hats keep you cooler. 2)Do you eat and/or drink during the biking or just the running? you should not need to eat anything in sprint distance and shorter - I tuck a gel in my race belt just in case but have not needed it yet. Hillier bike courses I drink water else I just wait for the run. 3)I have had some fog issues with my goggles so I bout Speedo's anti-fog solution. I sprayed and wiped the inside lenses with a tissue but still had them fog up. Should I not wipe the goggles and let the solution dry? I just use spit. Though now that I bought the sable goggles I don't do anything - expensive but fit me so much better.... Thanks!
It is only my first season so I am sure more experienced folks will give you additional info. |

Science Nerd 28760 Redwood City, California | Subject: RE: I have a few simple questions 1)Do you wear a hat during the running? I do. I like the hat. But that's personal preference. Some people don't and wear sunglasses. Some wear both. 2)Do you eat and/or drink during the biking or just the running? I tend to eat and drink more on the bike than I do running. I can't eat much during the run as it makes my stomach hurt and it's easier to eat and drink often on the bike. 3)I have had some fog issues with my goggles so I bout Speedo's anti-fog solution. I sprayed and wiped the inside lenses with a tissue but still had them fog up. Should I not wipe the goggles and let the solution dry? I usually put a few drops in and then spread it around with my finger. I give it about 5 minutes and then rinse them very well with water. I still usually spit in them before I go swimming and that helps too. |

Expert 968 Wellington, North Island | Subject: RE: I have a few simple questions 1)Do you wear a hat during the running? I do always in the summer. My skin is sensitive to sunscreen so I have to be careful, plus it helps prevent so much sweat running down into my eyes. 2)Do you eat and/or drink during the biking or just the running? I will drink on the bike no matter what the distance, but in a sprint tri I can also get by with skipping it on the run so this is my primary place for hydration. I think it also depends a lot on how you've practiced things in training. If you never drink on your rides, I'm not sure I'd try it on race day for the first time. 3)I have had some fog issues with my goggles so I bout Speedo's anti-fog solution. I sprayed and wiped the inside lenses with a tissue but still had them fog up. Should I not wipe the goggles and let the solution dry? Can't help you here. I just wear basic speedos and don't use a solution, spit, or anything else. If they fog the first couple minutes after I put them on, it goes away eventually. Edited by MissKelly 2008-08-16 8:57 PM |

Pro 6767 the Alabama part of Pennsylvania | Subject: RE: I have a few simple questions What they all said; but I just wanted to emphasize the importance of rinsing out the goggles after using either spit or antifog solution. What you are doing with the spit/anti-fog is smoothing out any micro scratches; the water rinse helps "polish" the interior surface to keep it smooth so fog can't start to form. |

I sprayed and wiped the inside lenses with a tissue but still had them fog up. Should I not wipe the goggles and let the solution dry? I treat my goggles with Speedo anti-fog, but also have to use spit on occasion. The Speedo stuff seems to help, but it's not 100%. The directions on the Speedo bottle say to spray it on, rinse, and allow to dry. Do not rub. I think rubbing removes the coating you just applied, and it won't work as well. |

108 | Subject: RE: I have a few simple questions 1) Yes, I do, but just do what ever you have done in your training. 2) Eating should not be necessary during a mini or sprint, especially not during the run - won't have time to help you anyway. Drink while on the bike since its easy to take with you, water or gatorade. Then take what ever water is provided on the run course if you need it. You may want a pre-race snack if you get there early and wait a long time to start. Just don't try anything new on race day! 3) Not sure - my goggles always fog up a little. Not too worried about it. Good luck in your race! |
