Subject: Do tires go bad if they are not on the bike?
So as not to hijack another thread...this question sort of popped in my head while answering theirs....

I have a favorite type of tire.  Last year when looking to purchase ONE that I needed I found them on sale.  Since I hadn't bought any tires in awhile I thought it would be good to pick up four since they were so cheap.

Well, I think I've used ONE of them.  The other three are still folded up in their packaging.  I truly thought I would have used more of them by now...but they are so nice I guess that they last long time.

Which brings me to the question...will the tires deteriorate if not used?  Do tires essentially have a "sell/use by" date?  Or is it so long (i.e. on the level of 5+ years) that it doesn't really matter?

Please, no smartarse "why don't you ride more" comments...I ride plenty, thank you!

Tires, like all rubber material will dry rot over time.

If you get really anal about it even running shoes have an "expiry date" which is why they usually have different color schemes and such every new year. Keeping them in the dark helps but rubber and plastic does break down just sitting there. Does the average runner notice buying end-of-year clearance shoes? Probably not.

I'd be fine on the tires as long as they're under 3-4 years old and are still pliable and show no cracking at all. It also depends how dry/humid your area is, etc.

If you don't leave them baking in the sun or something, they will last a long time.

I watched a special on the TDF a couple years ago about an Italian (I think) gentleman who specializes in aging tires and some teams will only ride his aged tires.  I don't know why but so don't ask.

definitely sounds like a Fox TV show - "When good tires go bad"

Actually, I heard about the aging too. The guy kept them in his dark basement to age them there.

I've had spares tubes go bad, but that was primarily from rubbing in their sleeve in my under-seat storage.

I talked to my LBS about my slicks for my mtn bike and they said as long as I keep them in the dark, they'll be fine. Hmm, speaking of, I should put those back on. Oh, uh, sorry, thread drift... so yeah, inspect them carefully, but you should be fine.

Well, I guess I could put them somewhere darker...they are just sitting on my pile of bike stuff in a bedroom.  Too bad I probably won't need them for a year or more since I'll be deployed again and unable to ride...

I'll just have to do my best to keep them nice.

Oh NO!! Where are you headed? Back to the Sand Box? Suckage...

You could also sell them now and squirrel the money away for new when you get back. What tires did you ride when you were deployed last time?

I've purchased tires in bulk a couple of times via the web.  I keep them in a drawer in my garage (which does get hot in the summer and fall), and I pull out a replacement every now and then.  I've had some in there for a couple years, and I haven't noticed any degradation so far.  My climate tends to be relatively low humidity, though.

i imagine that they are more likely to dry rot just sitting directly on a surface.  If you can - you might want to try hanging them on a hangar somewhere out of the way.  You can always just untwist the top of a wire hangar and slide the tire through then retwist it.
