I was searching for a cycling movie I saw as a kid with Kevin costner, couldnt remember the name (amerinan flyer).

found a list of cycling movies from google.

on the list was:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMX_Bandits_(film)

BMX Bandits....movie rocked.  remember watching that as a kid. My father bought me my frist "real" bike, and my decision was based on that great movie.

A Mongoose.

I wish I still had it.

Your link isn't good. Not your fault though. The link thingy is inserting some HTML on save. It's easy enough to get to anyway.

Have you seen the movie Pro? It's non-fiction. Check it out. It's a good one.

American Flyers was the later attempt at a cycling movie from the guy who did Breaking Away.  Didn't have as much success though.  I still like to watch it whenever it comes on.

Can't forget Rad ........ that came out when I was pretty heavily into freestyling.  I wore out the VHS tape on that movie so that it barely even was legible anymore.  I couldn't stand that song "Send Me an Angel" though ......

The Flying Scotsman (made in 2006) is also a movie I really enjoyed, though it's a bit darker than the previously mentioned movies.

re: american flyers..

gotta love that they give someone a "cannibal" nickname..

Is there any real race like "the hell of the west"

(I think I saw that movie like 50 billion times when I was a kid)

Those were the same two movies that came into my mind when I saw the thread title, lol. I have American Flyers on DVD...found it in a $2 bin years and years ago. I haven't seen Rad in like, 15+ years.

Especially since they had a cameo from Mercyx in it!

Not exactly by that name but I am pretty sure the race was based on the Coors Classic that they used to do out in CO.

I couldn't remember the Kevin Bacon one as I always get the name of the movie mixed up with the one about the high school wrestler that came out in that same time frame.

The Flying Scotsman was good and gave a great glimpse in Obree's life and troubles.  Plus it had the dude who played Merry from LOTR in it.

The Race it was based on (and used some footage from) was the old Coors Classic.  If you look at some of the banners and such, you'll notice the Coors Classic name all over them.

It was quite a race to spectate... but alas, the popularity of cycling in America (then and now) still has a long way to go.

American Flyers was based on the Coors Classic.

I wonder why that race could not be sustained.  If I recall correctly, Hinault won it once.  And maybe LeMond as well.

I hope the Tour of California doesn't go the way of Tour de Trump or Tour of Georgia.

Another great cycling movie - "A Sunday in Hell."

One of my favorite scenes is DeVlaeminck at breakfast.  The narrator says,"and here they are eating the perfect pre-race breakfast, rare steak."

You don't hear much about rare steak as a pre-IM meal. Smile

I loved QuickSilver-Kevin Bacon.   I loved the bike tricks.  I still have the 3 inch scar on my ankle to prove it.

Breaking Away is always a favorite.

I have American Flyers on DVD, I got it from the $2 bin, but have never watched it.

Another favorite of mine is a French flick called "2 Seconds" about a pro female downhill mountain biker who chokes at the start of a race and ends up as a bike messenger in Paris. She ends up becoming buddies with a cranky old racer turned bike mechanic. Most of it is in french with English subtitles. I saw it at blockbuster one day and rented it because it was about bikes. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0158446/

I remember when I saw another Kostner film, I was always like "hey, the guy who was in American Flyers"
He may have been better off that way than with Water World.
