Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It's been an interesting week on the bike for me. I have survived firecrackers, bottle rockets, and road rage. I had two incidents on the 4th involving fireworks. A young "gentleman", I use the term loosely, threw a pack of lit firecrackers my way as I proceeded through a stoplight with him and his buddies. Luckily, his aim was off and it passed by. It did scare the crap out of me. The second incident occurred about 45 minutes later the same evening. I had two bottle rockets sent my way from a yard as I rode by. This one passed closer and exploded in front of me. Again, code brown check had to be taken. I don't understand??? Why is it fun to throw anything at anyone that could potentially cause harm? The last incident occurred this evening as I was finishing my ride. A "polite and courteous" driver came up behind me as I was preparing for a left hand turn, laid on his horn, and passed within six inches of my right side and turned left. As I was passing his house, he yelled obscenities at me as I drove by...in front of his daughter. I stopped. I know I shouldn't. But, I just can't let a person say those things to me. I politely....yes, politely and calmly, informed him that I have the same right as a motor vehicle and must abide the same laws that apply to motor vehicles. I also informed him of the new Utah law that gives cyclists 3 feet. All, he could say was... "whatever (with the eye roll) I'm a long time bike rider and you F%#$'* don't what the F%# you're talking about. You have no F*^#'@ right to that F%#$'* lane and you were in it for F%#$'* 1/4 of a mile. Just wait until you're a F%#$'* road bump because I didn't F%#$'* see you until I was F%#$'*"right behind you". Does anyone else see the slip up in his story? I just don't get it. As a father why would you say those type of derogatory words about women in front of his daughter and, eventually, his wife? If he was a long time biker, why would he treat a fellow cyclist like that? If he was a long time cyclist, why would not know the rules of the road. I just don't get it. Thanks for letting me rant. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I think you handled that very well, you were the winner of that arguement because you were calm and collected. Some people are just like that and they dont understand. An observation i just made yesterday: Women get more crap for riding on the road. I went on a ride with a girl friend of mine and the screams out of the cars kept coming. I heard more "comments" out the windows of cars than i have on my own in the last 7 years of riding. So it just goes to show you that people simply need a reason to be stupid, and you should feel better than him just because your the one getting in shape and enjoying your riding while hes screaming obscenities at a cyclist while hes in a car.....what a guy. Im sure hes a winner.... |

Champion![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I would have said "OK, I've got everything you just said on my MP3 recorder. I'll be down at the police station within the hour with this, and report it to them as verbal harrassment, along with your admission of motor vehicle intimidation. I'll be letting them handle it. Have a nice day" And then ride off. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Looks like you handled things better than I would of, I like to listen to my surroundings especially in the city with heavier traffic but lately i have been listening to my mp3 player while riding and just ignoring all idiots. Just remind yourself karma is a bitch. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I am a bit more " muscular" than your average cyclist. That, and I have been in my share of, "hostile negotiations." If some jackass would have said that to me in front of his daughter, I would have felt the obligation to make an example of him in front of his daughter as well. Probably not the best response, but there is a line that everybody has that shouldn't be crossed. Disrespecting a person and a female at that is completely the incorrect choice. You did the right thing, but I probably would not have. Good job! |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() If he is a "cyclist" like he claims then go to his house and wait on him until he goes for a ride and follow him around and honk at him the whole time. Yes two wrongs don't make a right, but let him know how it feels to be honked at. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Someone lit a bottle rocket at me during my ride the day after independance day. I just don't understand why people feel the need to hurt others, people they don't even know. How did I hurt them? I didn't.... I was just enjoying my workout. Luckily, it didn't hit me. I would have turned around and found out who it was and gave them a piece of my mind. Sorry these things happened to you.... just keep in mind, there's a lot more really nice people than jerks in the world, we just tend to remember the jerks. Let them go and remember all the nice people who gave you extra room, and didn't shoot firecrackers at you. Those are the people that rock. ![]() |

I just don't understand why people feel the need to hurt others, people they don't even know. How did I hurt them? I didn't.... I was just enjoying my workout. DR HAMMER writes.......... But that's just it...WHY? I don't know them. I didn't say or do anything to them? What happened to the Golden Rule and "being your brother's keeper" I, nor any women or any person, should have to tolerate derogatory comments, harrassment of any kind while doing activities we enjoy while abiding by the law and not disrupting their life. Some days, I don't look forward to running or cycling because I don't have the tolerance that day for those actions. Edited by Dr Hammer 2005-07-13 1:22 PM |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Quite crafty, Max... I don't have an MP3 player, (just a tape playing Walkman...) so I wouldn't have even thought of that... you're good!!!

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Dr Hammer - 2005-07-09 8:15 PM All, he could say was... "whatever (with the eye roll) I'm a long time bike rider and you F%#$'* don't what the F%# you're talking about. Response: Mr. Aggressive Driver, I see that your driving skills are only exceeded by your awesome parental skills! Then I would've either: a) challenged him to show me where, in the DMV handbook, that says I can't be in the left turn lane to turn left, b) challenged him to a bike ride, and then drop him like a hot potato, or c) just kicked the crap out of him. *I* probably would've chosen the last one, but that's just me... |

Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I think you showed remarkable restraint. We don't have more than a few inches of shoulder to ride on here and people will move over to the right as much as possible. I was telling this story at work and the wife of one of the people who drive this way said that he does it on purpose because people on bicycles think they own the road. Interesting way to make a point... Our neighbor screams obscenities so loudly at his family that we can hear him next door with all our doors and windows shut. Can't figure that one out, either... |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I don't have an answerbut just look how drivers drive around other cars. I would say in an average day I have to avoid 2-3 accidents. They aren't going to change just because you're on a bike instead of a car. Everyone has a line and mine is when a car hits me. The driver better pray to what ever god they beleive in that I'm killed on impact because I will drag my road rashed ass up grab any disembodied limbs and beat them until they are in the same condition as me. Before taking up cycling I would have never thought I could think of a scenario where I would want to do serious physical harm to anyone. But after seeing the complete disregard for saftey by drivers so that they can save 2 seconds, anything is possible. |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've had my fair share of honking yelling drivers whizzing by, but people throwing firecrakers/bottle rockets at you???!!! Oh my god, I don't know what I would do if someone pulled that crap with me, but I'm willing to guess it would involve me putting them in a hurt locker. Big time. |
