Depends on where they are. Inside the home, outside the home, in a vegetable garden, give me a little more detail and I can probably help.

They are getting in the house. Haven't looked outside yet to see if I can tell where they are coming in at.
I was thinking I could get 20 Mule team borax around the outside of the house.

Ooh, watching this thread with interest.  In the past week I've found about 6 of them in the house on separate occasions in separate areas of the house.  I wasn't sure whether or not to be worried yet.  These suckers are resilient too.....it usually takes me a few attempts to squash them!

Bayer (yes the aspirin maker) Indoor/Outdoor stuff works great.
http://www.bayeradvanced.com/insects-pests/products/home-pest-contr...

I get it at Lowe's and hose down behind the couch where the wall meets the floor, all around the corners of the kitchen and all along the outside of the house about every 6 months.

I'm in what we call ant (little bitty black ant) country and if I don't keep up with it, I'll get a bazillion of the little suckers about 10 minutes after the insecticide has worn off even if the place is spotless.

Carpenter ants are rather tough because they may have set up residence in your home (walls, cabinets, etc). If they are outside and you know where they are getting in or find the cracks or crevices where they live and or entering, there are a couple of materials that work well. I think they are both formulated as baits which is good because they will carry it back to the nest, as well as powders which will get on them and they will transport back as well. Either fipronil (marketed as Maxforce I think) or ababmectin (Advance I think) or they may have a variety of trade names. Both are safe and have extremely low mammalian toxicity so you can use indoors or out. Hope this helps, if I think of anything else I'll let you know.

Works great. Be careful if you have pets, though. Whereas it's not conclusive, there's evidence it can do bad things when ingested.

It's not the big black ones, but on occasion, we have an ant problem  here in the desert.  They like to head indoors when it gets too hot.

First of all, we put away/contain any food.  If you leave food out?  It's a buffet.  Yours may not be into that, but just going on what we do.

Second, find where they get into the house.  We just follow the trail and find its some small crack or pin hole somewhere.

I buy an ant gel made by "Combat".  It's in a giant sized syringe and I inject it into the crack.  They eat and die, and it blocks the entry point.

You may have a  totally different species, so try multiple things until you hit on it.

If they are already IN your house, the perimeter home defense might keep them in rather than out. We had ants every year in the spring. The nice man at Ace hardware sold us Tarro, a borax containing sweet syrup. They eat it, take it home, and die, killing more of them in the nest. You want to do this until they kill the queen. It works. If you see one here and there - kill them and clean like crazy. These are scouts.

Conduct experiments first:

Then use some sort of toxic food that they take back to the nest.

x 2 for Tarro.  It will solve your ant problem in <48 hours.

I've had really, really good success with AntBlock.  Get it at Home Depot.  Spread it around the outisde perimeter of the house, no more ant problems.  Has worked on multiple occasions.
