I don't usually wear wide width shoes but I recently bought a pair of clipless pedals and shoes. On the last several rides the outsides of my feet begin to hurt. It's as if the sides of my feet are "hanging over" the sides of my shoes.

A quick search did not reveal anyone who makes wide width shoes.

Or are they just going to hurt until I get used to them?

I have Shimano wide men's road cycling shoes and they keep my feet much happier than my tri shoes. I wore my tri cycling shoes for 2 seasons and found when I rode longer my balls of my feet would cramp up. Different brands run differently as to width. Perhaps you bought a more narrow brand.

These are the ones I have...much better price now than what I paid too.

I wear these to train and for races HIM and longer. I race sprints & olys in my tri shoes.

I have the same problem. I have heard to generally look for shoes made in Thailand ( I think ) or the US, since they're supposedly cut a little wider than shoes made in Italy or elsewhere in Europe.

I tried on Pearl Izumi Vagabond R4's and was surprised that they were cut a little wider than normal.

Also, the Performance brand 310's were wider.

I have heard good things about Lake 165's in wide. Here's a link: http://www.nashbar.com/profile.cfm?category=600084&subcategory=6000...

Oops.... forgot about the Sidi's, they make a wider version, maybe someone else has some experience/knowledge about these.

Given that no cycling shoe is made wide enough for my feet (6E width), SIDI Mega is not too bad. It also really helps to have the LOOK system for the wider base of support across the ball of your foot, rather than SPD.

Most of the SIDI shoes come in what they call Mega width.

I don't have wide feet but my feet will swell in the heat of the summer. I purchased a pair of cycling sandals and I am going to give them a shot this year. During some of my training rides last year the pain was incredible from my feet swelling. I hope the sandals help.

I've had the same issues for years with my Sidi's with lateral foot pain at times (there several years old, not sure what model). I just picked up a pair of LG Carbon Tri Air's in standard mens width and found I don't get the foot discomfort my Sidis' had given me in the past. I've only used the LG's on the trainer, but like them so far. I had to stop some long rides last summer/fall due to my foot pain in my Sidi's, besides lateral foot pain, I had troubles on the underside too, especially around the cleat.

I don't normally wear wide shoes/boots, except for Easton ice hockey skates, and Warrington fire and USAR boots.

I'm sure foot wear can be like wet suits, to each there own.

Good luck

I am glad to hear about the LGs i am getting a pair here this week. I tried the Sidis and I liked the shoe but man my right foot was cramping bad... i dont know why. Currently i am riding the Pearl Izumi Charger R1 i think is the shoe and i have had no issue with them. They are plenty wide and comfortable... just need the same in a tri shoe!~

I've found that some manufacturers are different in width, for example, my pearls are narrower than my Lakes which are narrower than my forte (performance brand) cycling shoes. That said, before giving up on your shoes, I'd try loosening the strap, wear thinner socks, get a thinner insole or take it out altogether and see if that helps.

I also have the LGs, and the feel pretty roomy, certainly more so than my old Specialized shoes.

Thanks for the input guys. Looks like I have to try a few new shoes. My feet are KILLING me after my ride today.

x3 on the LGs.

I tried the Shimano shoes but they were too narrow. LGs are perfect.

I wear wide (D-width) Brooks Adrenalines for running and have found that most other shoes (even in wides) are too narrow. I have to think that bike shoes are the same.

Good point... although New Balance in 4E and ASICS in 2E have been plenty wide for me.

Hey Rottieguy and whoever has owned Sidi's and LG's:

I live on a small island where nobody sells tri-shoes so need to buy a pair online. and am interested in the LG tri air shoes. Even more now if they have a wide fit.
I currently have a pair of Sidi shoes size 43 (US 9 I think). How do LG sizes compare to Sidi's ?

Thanks

I have the LG Tri shoes and they are the ones that give me cramps..and don't fit my feet well. I'm surprised by how many of you like them who have wide feet.
