Veteran  237   Buffalo Grove |  Subject: Wear your helmetsI know that we all tend to get complacent and sometimes forget things. But I just wanted to send out a quick reminder to wear your helmets. Had two friends and training partners wind up in the hospital last night due to a bike crash. Luckily both were wearing helmets. |

And not only to wear your helmet, but REPLACE IT after any crash or impact and after 3-4 years even if not crashed. UV sunlight will break down and diminish a helmet's protective ability. Most manufacturers recommend replacing a helmet that's been used out in the sun quite a bit every 3-4 years and that's not just to sell more helmets. Sunlight can be one of the most damaging things out there in many ways. |

Champion 5782 Northridge, California | Subject: RE: Wear your helmets Saw not just one, but two, riders yesterday in full-on spandex kit riding on a pretty technically demanding mountain road--that is also very heavily traveled by cars--both with no helmets. My wife has a name for riders like that... She calls them "Organ Donors." |

We chose a route, unknowingly, that followed the edge of a cliff. While straddling the crossbar and walking my bike over a tree root (bad move), my foot got caught on a pedal and I went tumbling down the cliff (about 40-50 feet - all rock). A lot of the fall was head-to-rock. When I sat up at the bottom, I had a few scrapes on my legs and many cracks and holes in my helmet, but was completely fine. Long story short... I wear my helmet everytime I ride. |

Champion 10020 , Minnesota Bronze member | Subject: RE: Wear your helmets I've seen this a lot lately (bare heads) and I even posted on Facebook about it, and got a lot of responses from people who also thought it seemed rampant. It's also important to make sure your helmet fits properly and snugly. I am thinking about making a custom t-shirt for rides on the local bike path that says "Where is your helmet?" on the back. Or something along those lines. I want to make a statement, but I don't want to say anything overtly mean (i.e. Only Idiots Don't Wear Helmets). I'm also thinking of contacting local media to ask them to do a story. Gee - you'd think helmets would be a no-brainer at this point. Oh wait... |

One day I saw a very little girl laying in the gutter, next to her downed bike. Another bigger girls (2 years or so older) riding towards me with a weird look on her face, also no helmet, I assumed sister (and thought, why isn't she helping her?). I figured when I got to the little girl I would help her, but an adult male showed up and walked over to her. I assume he was her dad because he didn't act like a stranger would, more familiar. I just kept running along and tried not to look at them because I was worried I might start a fight. What person let's his children ride in the street with no helmets??? If she didn't hit her head on the fall itself, now she is laying IN THE STREET totally unprotected. I don't get it. |

The truth is not mean...the truth is THE TRUTH. I said that exact thing to a friend about riding her motorcycle without a helmet. She's still pissed at me. But I don't care. I won't let a friend of mine do something that stupid without telling them how much of an idiot I think they are. |

NONE of them wear helmets, on bikes or scooters. I've seen the 10 month old in a rear-mounted seat, no helmet. (no helmet for Mom either, of course.) Whenever they are over at our house, and want to use our bikes/scooters, I make them wear helmets. One night, their mom was over with them, and they wanted to ride our bikes. I told them "You know the rules!" They looked at their Mom like "do we really have to?" Luckily, she backed my play.... that night. They still don't ever have to wear helmets on their bikes. UGH! |

| Expert 828 | Subject: RE: Wear your helmets Most around here are good about wearing helmets. The big/popular group rides won't let you go if you don't wear one. I cracked one in 3 places a while back. Even with the helmet I had a nice concussion and was nauseated and dizzy for 2 days. I wouldn't be doing tri's if i weren't wearing that helmet...heck, I might not even be here. |
