Zipp 404s-valve question

| Subject: RE: Zipp 404s-valve question I've got Mavic's, not Zipps, but they're close to the same size. I get 70mm (if I can find them) or 80mm valve stems. You won't be able to attach the pump with 60mm stems. |

I was thinking that might be the way to go. Do you bring plumbers tape as well? Anywhere to get them cheaper as those tubes are expensive? But much cheaper than a new tubular tire on my old Zipp 404s. |

Today I went to fill up my 808 and ya I can tell that air is going in but the pressure valve on my pump is reading anything. So after talking to a friend who was a pro rider suggested that I try Vittorias Valve extenders over the Zipp ones. With Vittorias you do not have to use plumbers tape. All you have to do is get tubes like Continental Race tubes or any tube with a removable valve core, screw on the Vittoria Valve extender re-install the vale core to the top of the extender and boom you have an extender that works like a regular tube with out one. The other thing I do like that was mentioned above is pre attach an extra valve extender to a spare that is long enough for my 808 rear and which will also work with my 404 front. If I get two flats then I maybe S O L or I could just carry a 80mm tube as a back up for the front. |

But just like what was said above, once you install these, they act like regular stems. I have never had one leak and I did try to go with 80mm stems but they were hard to find where I live and ride. So I buy 48mm conti tubes and use these. I set up the third one on my spare tube. I use the Teflon tape, but I think they would seal without it. I just want the extra insurance, but then again I have been accused of overkill. I just got a pair of 808's and the 80mm tubes don't reach out far enough to inflate without extenders and the zipp ones are like you said, no idea how much air is going in. |

These tubes also come in a 60mm valve stem but it is not long enough for 55mm rims. My spare is a butyl tube with a 66mm stem which is just long enough for my CO2 chuck/crack pipe. Shane |

Like Fred said, I bought some latex tubes for racing and they only come 60mm, so I will use them for Race Day. My experience with two different extenders have both been crappy. I used the plumbers tape and the extenders are fine for a week or so. But after a couple hundred miles, they always seem to come loose and when I try to re-pump them it's a nightmare. So for Race Day the extenders are fine, but for continual everyday training-use I have had lots of problems with them. Just my experience |

Luckily it was a training group ride but I ended up having to patch the tire instead of using a new tube since I couldn't air it up with the shorter stem. I got lucky. I have 80mm stems AND valve extenders in case I have to bum a tube if I kill the spares. |
