Even though today was in the 70s, and tomorrow is going to be in the 70s, they're predicting a high of 54 degrees for Sunday. I'll be getting out of the water around 8, which means it isn't going to be 54... maybe 44.

I've done all my racing and training in late spring, summer, early fall. I've been fine in shorts and a sleeveless tri top. I'm not sure I like that combo for getting on the bike while wet.

I've got a wetsuit for the swim, so no worries there.

What do I wear for the bike and run?

Help?

If you get the arm warmers wet they will only turn into arm coolers.

Well, I would towel off as best as possible (make sure to have that towel in T1), and then slip on the arm warmers, or a long-sleeve wic-material top.
You'll eventually start to warm up, but if there's a wind, you'll stay cool.
Maybe have a thin pair of gloves for your fingers.

I do all my training rides lately early in the AM and its usually not more than 52ish. I do long sleeve under armour, short sleeve under armor, another tee and arm warmers. Usually can tough it up in shorts although I do leg warmers or thermal pants. Most rides are only about 35-40 miles. I like being warm, but im also training slow.I say sleeves and a tri top and gloves during a race. You can keep them in your back pockets if you get warm.

I didn't see distance.  This matters because of intensity.  Running a sprint at threshold intensity will be significantly different than HIM time and effort levels.  Las post had some things I'd look at, but the distance would make a difference for me.

Aarggh good point. "Olympic" distance - a 40 miler. Not worried about the run so much as the beginning if the bike.

I can make 50's with only taped shoe vents at that distance and if it's dry and without much wind (north vs south wind matters at these temps).  For one in those temps, some wind and raining I used a lightweight Under Armor long-sleeve and compression sleeves (UA Heat Gear, technically).  Comfy in that running like 5-10 bpm under threshold HR.  High 40's would have been fine too.  Low 40's and I would have considered a thicker long-sleeve (cold-gear level) and heavier socks.  Might look at some light weight gloves too.  Wind proofing/resistance is all that matters when going harder here.  My aero helmet has ear flaps, so they're well protected from direct wind.

My first sprint is less than a week away. Overnight temps are now in the mid 40's. Outdoor heated pool but what I'm concerned about is the bike leg. Thinking of a long sleeved tech shirt and cycling jersey at T1 and dropping the jersey at T2.

As someone who has done 4+ almost sub-freezing races I'd say put the arm warmers on under the wetsuit. They will be wet for awhile but they block the wind. Or put on a small tight shell jacket that's easy to get on for the bike. You don't want to be someone pulled for hypothermia.

I did an Olympic distance tri a few weeks ago in similar weather, only it was raining too. All I did was put a light jacket and gloves on for the bike, and I was miserable and cold until I got warmed up about 1/2 way through the run. I tend to get cold really easily though. So I voted to put the arm warmers on in T1 - you can always take them off if you don't need them!

Tri-shorts and short sleeve shirt only. The 40 to 50 degree range is the best for running in tri-gear only. I did a duathlon last year with 4 inches of snow on the ground and start of the race was 18 degrees. Only added a long sleeve shirt and compression pants.

Warm up sleeves are for wimps - Sorry Dave!!

Wow, either you guys are a lot harder than I am, or, you're a bunch of vicious sadists.

At the start of the race, teh announced air temperature was 45; the water temperature was 64. I went with tri shorts under my wetsuit, toweled off a bit in T1, put on a sleeveless compression shirt (to help block the wind) and my tri top, and arm warmers, a skullcap, and toe covers over the shoes. I skipped the gloves - and I wish I hadn't. By the end of the ride, my arms were fine, my head was fine, my legs were OK, my fingers were so cold it was hard to push the shifters, and my toes felt like blocks of ice.

My feet warmed up on the run, as did my hands, and I traded in the skullcap for a visor.

Overall, a great race - my first ever podium (3rd in AG) - though I don't know the splits because they somehow got the bike and run splits messed up. No way I biked 28.5 mph, and no way I ran 22:15 miles.

I'm happy, but glad I didn't try it in just tri shorts and a tri top. That would have sucked.

There's always a wind screen to stay warm.

Only time I've added arm warmers to tri top was for a chilly IM bike leg coming out of a 58F swim.  Otherwise, for late season races, it's been tri top/tri shorts only.

I had my longest transition splits ever.  I made sure to dry off after the swim and pulled on tights over tri shorts, plus a long sleeve shirt with lightweight jacket and gloves.  A little warm the few times the sun peaked out and on some of the loooooooooooonger hills but couldn't have done without them.  For the run, got rid of tights and jacket.  It took awhile on the run to get my feet back.  I've spent the afternoon wrapped under blankets sipping tea and watching movies with the kids

ps: except when waiting for my wave (almost the last one), the swim was quite comfortable.
