Late 90s Land Rover Discovery Owners

If you buy one make sure it is a discovery II--I think that these came about 98.  Also do not buy one with the adjustable air suspension.  This information comes from my brother-in-law who used to sell them. 

I love my Land Cruiser - went 200,000 miles without a serious mechanical repair - seriously, I replaced the starter once. That's it.

It is currently in the shop.

I've got a '98 Disco and love it ... I am one of the few people that actually take it off road, get it muddy and scratch up the paint from driving it in the woods. I also have had it for 5+ years w/out needing any serious mechanical repair (knock on wood).

That being said, you won't pass many gas stations without being a regular ... at each one.  As I do not have a long commute, it is not an issue for me - but I can see how it could add up quickly. (Do not be disappointed when you see ~10mpg.) Also, there is not a lot of power under the engine (but plenty of torque), which can contribute to the gas consumption.

I plan on driving the wheels off mine but will probably breakdown and buy *gasp* a stationwagon next (easier to put the bikes/kayaks on top).

Have you looked into the Volvo XC or Suburu?  ... both are also well suited to hauling gear and last forever.

The bigger Unlimited version actually has cargo space!

Got mine with both the ragtop and hard top, love it.  TONS cheaper than the Rover.

And if you take the doors off you can show off those studly legs of yours.

Don't how much the are dealin now, but last summer I got mine loaded (6 cd in dash, subwoofer, both tops, etc.) for about 23k.

Pay $4.95 and check out Consumer Reports Online.  You can compare/contrast different, but similar, autos. 
I did this when I bought my Acura...I now have 178,000 miles on it and it's been in the shop once (squeaky brakes).  It's cheap to fix, because the Honda dealership does it.
