Some quick notes on books I've read:

Triathlon 101 (John Mora) - Too Basic, few details, author tangents too much, poor swimming section, disappointing narrative, great cover

Triathlon Training (Michael Finch) - great color pictures, excellent graphs and stats, text and content are above average

Complete Triathlon Book (Triathlete Magazine) - very basic info., black and white photos, you can find the same info on the net for free

Triathlete's Edge (Marc Evans) - decent swim section and unique insights with exercises to develop core strength, otherwise very basic bike and run info.

Open Water Swimming (Penny Lee Dean) - I learned how to swim by reading this book and listening to the Master Swimmers at the local YMCA - - solid, focused, swim info. for novices, easy read

The Triathlete's Training Bible  (Finch) - Maybe it is just the right info. at the right time in my evolution but I'm impressed. This book contains all "meat" and no fluff .

If you are looking for a well written (though somewhat technical) book on tri training - - take some time with the Triathlete's Training Bible. I cannot say enough good things about it. The bumble bee and horse analogy is, by itself, almost worth the purchase price.

I recommend all of the ones I am selling  :

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=43489&posts=7&start=1

Seriously, I am selling them as a fundraiser, I have read and enjoyed and learned from them all, but they are now taking up space.  I also have  Sally Edwards' Triathlon Training for Women which I would part with for 15.00 (sadly...I sure love Sally Edwards..)

Triathlete Training Bible - not for beginners but a lot of info
Triathlon Training (Finch) - great for learning about the sport, plus some training plans

and my favorite book:

Zinn and the Art of Road Bike Maintenance - A must for anyone who owns a road bike.

Although I know nothing about you nor your workout regime... but the most amusing book to get started with is "Slow Fat Triathlete"... it is a really light read with some great anecdotal stuff to get you started... If you are looking for a workout schedule... this is not the book to read, but it is really funny. I loved it...

Incidentally, if you are looking for a "workout" schedule, I read a number of the listed books, but the best one I found was right on this website. Seriously. No one is paying me to say this, I just found the workouts on BT to be clear, useful and easy to follow!

Good luck with your reading and training.

I've only read a few, but go to your local library and see what they have.  I've read Iron Will and Becoming an Ironman so far and they are fantastic (and free at the 'brary).  Iron Will is great if you want to learn about the early days of Hawaii/Ironman.

I think you mean Joe Friel, not "Finch".  Either way it's a great book.

Think I have all of them... list below together with my thoughts - if I'm missing some people let me know!

Books
Triathlete's Training Bible - Get
Triathlon Trianing for Mortals - Don't bother, dated
Breakthrough Triathlon Training - Interesting, but can be confusing if you haven't got your head around conventional training yet
Going Long - awesome, even if you're not going iron yet. One of my faves
Triathlete Magazine's Beginners Triathlon Training - Great if you only want one beginner book
Triathlon Running / Swimming / Cycling - All great books, but too much overlap in terms of training theory - would be better if they'd published them all together (though they probably wouldn't have made as much)
Becoming an Ironman - Cool but can get repetitive
Nutrition for Endurance Athletes - Great, just wish I had time to log my food and put more of this into practice
Freestyle Swimming for Triathlon - (TI book) Great, get rather than the TI book as much duplication
Total Immersion - Great
Triathlon Training Basics - Good, but there are better - too many training plans
Workouts in a Binder - Great swimming book, but dry each page after use to precent mould ;-)

DVDs
Triathlon Through the Eyes of the Elite - Very interesting, don't learn much
Racing Faster - Great, made my first Tri so much easier
Swim Smooth, clean up your stroke - Much better than TI, very tri specific with good OW swim and wetsuit tips as well
Total Immersion - Good, but see above
Evolution Running - Like a lot, need to watch more. Combine with the book (which appears to be same as the Mierke Triathlon Running book)

another great book:
beIRONfit - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1592282393/002-9054607-2988016?v=g...

3 good options for ironman plans as well as tons of info for training (even if you aren't doing an ironman)
