Is there someplace that typically houses these data? We have had an unseasonably cool August (not that I am complaining) and I'm wondering if I'll be swimming in much colder-than-usual water...

trishie - 2009-08-07 10:06 AM I think boating/ state park websites would have that information.
Just google "temperature of lake x"
Great call, worked for the lake I wanted to know. Thanks.
What is normally the temp. where one may want to consider wearing a wetsuit?
Legal temp = 78
Temp I would actually wear one would change by distance and whether I had full sleeve or no sleeve.
Somewhere around 70 for 1500 meters would be about right.

Depends where you race, here in Quebec we can't wear a wetsuit when the water is at 72 and warmer.

The race is in South Dakota in 3 weeks. I checked today and the water temp. is 74. Being that it is only my 2nd tri, I don't have a wetsuit and was going without one. The race director said only 10% used them last year. It is a 500M swim.

If it's 70 or better don't sweat it. At 500M, if it's about 65 or higher, don't worry about it. Get your face in the water before the cannon goes off, though. Get over the initial shock, even that warm will have a mild brrrr factor.
