Finally managed to break 21mph as an average speed over my regular ride. PB used to be 20.40mph then I bought aerobars last week and managed 21.28mph as an average speed. I think they benefited me as I'm 6ft 3in tall and my body was acting like a sail before the aerobars!

Just wanted to share another milestone hit and in perfect time before my last tri of the season this Sunday.

Way to go!!!!!
The only way I can do that is on a 50% downhill with the wind at my back and a T-rex chasing my overly large butt.

Isn't aerodynamics a wonderful thing.

Congrats on your success!

Congrats!  I hit my 21 mph race goal this summer.  I think 22 will be much harder!

Nice work- 21 mph is FOP and definitely not easy to accomplish.

My next race is a dead flat sprint, so I'm ditching my hill climbing chainrings (36/46 cyclocross setup...great for rolling hills...not so good for flat sprint!) and going with a 53t chainring. Considering adding an aerobar to the setup as well. I take it you would recommend that.

Q: Which aerobar did you choose? I'm running standard drop bars now and feel pretty much like the sail another poster mentioned.

^^^^^^ In answer to post above:

I bought Kinetic one TT bars on ebay but they only ship to the EU so if you're in America they won't send them there. However I've since realised that they are an Ambrosio product so you should be able to find them elsewhere.

The reason I bought these was that they mount so the aerobar sits under the main handlebar and the pads are just above the main handle bar (see picture) unlike most which attach above the bar meaning the pads are very high therefore limiting any aero benefit.

I therefore strongly recommend trying to find a similar product that mounts in a similar way. Also they are increadibly adjustable.

Not sure where 21 mph would be FOP; it's more like 23-26mph for FOP in sprints around here.

Still, nice job on the OP's improvement. Aerobars give good benefits, T.I.T.S. is what you need to build on that.

Agreed maybe not quite FOP but a nice improvement as that average speed would have placed me 21/304  in my last race so fingers crossed for this Sunday.

Congrats!! Looks like that would have been FOP at your last race, the last 2 sprints I've done it would have been too. It's always a great feeling to see improvement.  Just seems to make you want to work even harder. Good luck on your race this weekend!

Grats!

I've been trying to break the 20mph on my local course (20 miles) for years, hit 19.3 the other day.  Closest I got was 19.7.   Its not exactly flat and usually has a nasty headwind, I feel I'm there if I can get out there on a day with no headwinds.

My 21.2 got me in the top 21% overall and top 25% in my AG in my last sprint (17 mile bike, 332 finishers).  I would bet 21 mph is good for top 1/3 in most sprints races.  Depends on distance of course and on how you define FOP.

My 20.3 got me 42/355 this past Sunday. Granted, there were four spots of gravel which you had to slow down to 5 mph.

I still think 21 mph would get you in the top 3rd most races.
