Any recomendations for a digital SLR or SLR-like camera in the sub-$500 range? I already have a nice non-digital SLR, so I'm just looking for something that takes good pictures (they don't have to be museum quality).

Don't think there's any slrs out there new for under $500.

If you already have a lens system, I'd look at a body to match it.

A Nikon D50 or a Canon EOS Rebel will run you $650 to $700. Remeber that you will also need additional accessories to make them really functional. Be prepared to buy extra batteries and a decent memory card.

Also, if you're going to shoot digitally you really ought to have Photoshop.

There are always some good deals on Ebay for used bodies. Kodak made some excellent cameras. I'm still using a Kodak 760. I've seen a bunch of them come up for auction as photographers start upgrading to the new generation of cameras. Sadly, Kodak stopped selling pro bodies. They had the best ones on the market.

As far as SLR-like/prosumer cameras, I don't know.

I've been looking for one as well, but haven't seen anything under $500. If you forgo the SLR idea, you can get a great Digital camera for under $500, heck you can get a waterproof one (perfect for the swim portion) with 4 megapixels for around $300.

Good Luck,
Jay

Great. It's not enough that I have to worry about the kicking and the hitting on my swim, now I've to worry about flash blindness too?

I don't think you'll find a Digital SLR for under $500, especially if you don't already have a lens for it. I got one of the Nikon D70s bodies because I already had the N70 and could use my telephoto lens on it, but it was still well over $500.

Don't forget to add storage media to your budget and a good 1GB CompactFlash card is going for around $100.

Good luck.

Just remember that not all pixels are created equal. The number of megapixels is just one mesure for comparing cameras.

There are a lot of other factors like sensor/pixel size, bit depth and most importantly the dynamic range of the capture.

My 2 megapixel Kodak 720 will blow away any images made with any 4 to 6 megapixle consumer camera. (wish I could be as brazen about my bike )

It really depends on what you want to use the images for.

Dpreview.com is a great place to compare cameras.

My friend has had the D100 for a few years now and it is really good. Unfortunately it's not under $500 though.

Good luck,

Thanks guys.

Any thoughts on the SLR-like cameras? FujiFilms has some highly reviewed SLR-like cameras around $400. I've always liked Fuji's film, but don;t know anything about their cameras.

Oooh my first digital camera was a fuji. It was the highest Mpixels that I could get back then 2.1, I think. Currently my digital camera is an hp. 5.1 Mpixels. Still it doesn't take as good of pics as the Fuji. Maybe the Fuji had a really nice lens? So that's my way of recommending the Fuji cameras.

Fuji makes some decent pro level SLR cameras.

$400 will buy you quality.

What kind of images are you looking to make?

I've got several different camera systems. Sometimes the $200 Sony digital camera I bought last summer is just what I need to get a quick family snapshot. Sometimes I need the $25,000 SLR system I bought three years ago. And sometimes film is still the best way to go.

Sorry to get carried away. Photography is my profession, and I do want to get into museums. Hopefully MOMA.

I guess it's like tri vs road vs mnt vs bmx bikes. Which one is best depends on what you want to do with it.

Don, Nice stuff.

I have a good non-digital (film) SLR I use when I want really good stuff (at least as good as my stuff ever turns out).

I'm looking for something that will produce quality images (not museum quality, but something really nice) for family pictures, the occasional picture while hiking, pictures of me during tris, etc.

Probably 90% of it will be "point and shoot." I want a camera my wife can pick up and take decent pictures for when we have kids.

Yea, then $400 is more than enough to get that.  I think the Sony that I bought for that sort of image ran about $250.

Keep your film SLR for the other work.  You may even want to have CD's made when you get the film processed so you can always be working digitally post shoot.

Feel free to pm me when you choose one if you'd like my opinion.

Again, dpreview.com is a great place for comparisons.

Jumping in this late, so don't have a whole lot to add to the good advice above.

I haven't been keeping tabs on the point and shoot market, but a lot of people are getting great results with the Fuji 810.  Might want to look at the forums on digitaldiver.net - it's for underwater, but people shoot a lot of topside stuff as well.

As for the cost of the camera, lenses, storage media, photoshop.... just be glad you don't house it to take it underwater and need a housing, strobe arms, strobes.....  :^

I use a Canon Digital Rebel for underwater work, used to use an Olympus 5050, website is below.  While not my profession, like Don, it is a gentleman's hobby

with the new XT, maybe you can find a used D Reb on ebay or similar for not a whole lot above $500?

One thing no one has mentioned, maybe you know about it, but prosumer point and shoot digicams have "shutter lag," mostly caused by the LCD display on the back.  Can be frustrating if you are not used to it.

I have worked in the photo inductry for over 15 years, and it is amazing how quickly technology changes.  I am now shooting with a Nikon D-50 and LOVE It!  I have used a digital point and shoot for about 5 years, and finally feel like a real photographer again.  If you even think you want an SLR, make the investment because you will not be dissapointed!
