Comments: As I noted on the pre-race routine, I was not expecting spectacular results, my run mileage for the last 60 days has been substantially down compared to the lead-up to the marathon on 12/2/07. I was still thinking, based on the 15K time trial I did last weekend (which, in retrospect, was a mistake), that I would finish somewhere slightly under or over 2:00, but at Mile 1 I could tell from the way my legs were that today it really was going to be a practice/training race - and I was totally cool with that. I already had my t-shirt, got a flipping AWESOME deal on some running shoes at Fleet Feet Davis the day before picking up my packet, and I'd have another finisher's medal on my wall if a) I didn't die or b) was kidnapped by aliens - sometime shortly after running 13.1 miles. I also knew that I had gained weight during taper and had not taken much of it off before this race, and we *did* have a headwind the entire second half in the 15-20 mph range. So I was not expecting spectacular results. I did the race iPodless, as noted... I think that may have been a mistake, but the forecast was for rain, but it cleared off before the start and we had a partly cloudy, if slightly brisk day (although I was hot during the whole race - just poured sweat) with the wind. The temp was in the upper 40s though, which is still a little cold for my liking. If I'd known it was going to be dry I would've carried my iPod, because... This race was chock FULL of annoying, high-maintenance upper middle class people who were complaining about their lives and competing with each other loudly while running the whole way. It was annoying to hear the talking through the noses about some pretty droll stuff... I'd go into details but I'm afraid it'd make the sportsfans barf chunks. This is the first race I've done where I actually wanted to get the hell out of there as soon as it ended because the air was thick with people complaining about lame things (like someone not pulling their weight at some semi-celebrity auction in Davis). What would you do differently?: Not get fat. Run more beforehand. Eat more fiber. TAKE MY IPOD. ![]() Post race
Warm down: I was sweating pretty heavily... retrieved the Blonde and grabbed some water and walked back to the car, drove back to Tahoe Park, showered, and stuffed pizza down my gullet. What limited your ability to perform faster: Insufficient run volume before the race, headwinds, lameness, insufficient run volume before the race, recovering from a marathon, temperature, forgetting my foil hat so the aliens couldn't beam 'run slower' thoughts into my head. Event comments: I put another half-marathon in the archives, this was a nice training race and I can say I ran in the Davis Stampede. The annoying yentas in this race though definitely made it a "I've done once, move onto the next please" sort of event for me; there's a 30K here in Sacramento that makes more sense for me to do and doesn't take a half hour to drive to in the month of February. :) Oh, and The Blonde didn't hiss at me after drinking a pot of English Breakfast Tea anymore. So that's a good thing. Last updated: 2007-11-19 12:00 AM

Well, as is often the case, I was wayyyy too jacked for this race, although I wasn't expecting spectacular results as my run volume was way down in Dec and Jan after CIM on Dec. 2nd; never having done a marathon before, I had no idea how long it would take my body to recover, so I cut back my run volume - lots - and spent more time on the bike, particularly in January. It was a little bit of an experiment, but, in the back of my mind, I figured this would be a training/recovery race if there was such a thing.
Woke at up 3:30, tossed and turned, and finally got up around 5:00, read the paper, ate some crumpets and leftover hash browns from breakfast at Cornerstone on Saturday morning, loaded and unloaded the dishwasher, and made fresh coffee - after grinding it, of course, this is fruitier and nuttier California, after all, and The Blonde requires coffee if I'm going to drag her out of bed at 6:00 to fire up her sled and transport me to Davis, CA, home of Bezerkely Lite - UC Davis - for this race.
I even wiped off the kitchen counter. I'm so good. Then I took her the cup of fresh hot coffee, made strong enough to create a hyper break dancing zombie, just as she likes it, with two Sweet and Lows and a shot of skim milk from Happy California Cows (I've seen 'em. They're damn happy cows if I must say so).
We rawked into Davis at about 7:00 am with the race start at 8:10. And got an incredible parking spot, two blocks from the start/finish and conveniently close to the Davis Crepeville (my favorite restaurant, there are 3 of them, two in Sacramento (one in Midtown, the other in Curtis Park), which was *right flipping next to the finish chute*. I parked The Blonde inside with the Sunday paper, a copy of "Sacramento's Alternative Newspaper, the Sacramento News and Review" (basically our local smut personals ad and radical leftism street freebie) and her book, got her a pot of English Breakfast tea with serious amounts of caffeine in it - as she had been yowling at me like a cat in distress all the way over the frickin' Yolo causeway on I-80 to Davis - yes, she was yowling like a real cat and hissing at me - smiled, and went to the porta potties, took a whiz, and jogged lightly for about five minutes before queuing up at the start line.
