Sensei ![]() | ![]() Didn't want to rip off the other thread. I'm hitting up the big apple and the capitol next month. I think I got the entertainment covered - broadway, museums, etc. I want to get some training (running, I guess) in and also want it to be memorable. Any tips. I thought that running central park would be beyond cool and memorable.... |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Run the National Mall. It's about a 5.5 mile loop, more if you add on the tidal basin and Memorial Bridge. It's a great run, and if you time it right, you can watch sunrise over the Capitol. Which is awesome ![]() |

There's a greenway that goes from Battery Park all the way up to the George Washington Bridge. Great views of the Hudson river, Statue of Liberty, etc. Depends where you're staying, I guess. |

I'll probably get a little "verclempt" seeing the Stat. of Liberty on a run and ground zero to offer respects.... |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() If you want to nice view of Manhattan, I might suggest going across to Weehawken, NJ (You can take the ferry) and have a run along the piers. It's an awesome view. |

Yet I saw a couple celebrities there when I was in NYC for a couple months. And yes, the national mall in DC is awesome, as is running along the river in Georgetown, strictly for the `scenery' in that area. Or at least that was my experience. |

I ran the Frostbite 10 Mile race in CP a number of years ago. Going in, I thought "Meh, flat 10 miles in the cold..." CP is anything BUT flat - great place to run! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() you probably won't get up this way but Van Cortlandt park in the north bronx has beautiful, hilly cross-country trails, and is the start of a run/bike trail that runs all the way up (with some detours) into Putnam County. Edit: on the off chance you want to check out VC park, take the #1 train up to the end of the line (242nd st & vc park). get out and you are there. Edited by lorabby 2008-04-06 6:25 PM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() as far as dc goes - i like east potomac part for workouts. the loop is 3.5 miles, so it's good for running and for a few loops before heading out to the streets of dc. and on the back side, i love to watch the planes take off and land. which gets me into trouble when i slow too much on my bike to watch, LOL. anyway my tri club meets there a lot, there are always a ton of runners and bikers. |

I thought that running central park would be beyond cool and memorable.... Central Park is a little hilly, but considering I run there 3 times a week, I think this can be a pretty easy route. Just avoid taking the full Central Park drive around near 110th St. as there is the huge hill on the backside. (unless you want a great hil run) I would recommend running around the Reservoir, it is an amazing view and very flat. Depending on where you are entering the park and how much distance you want, you can cover basically any distance in the park. I also second the running on the greenway on the Hudson river. I've run from the park under the GW bridge on the NJ side, across the GW Bridge and down to Riverside park before (9 miles). Spectacular views. Plus, as my old office was across the street from Battery Park, I've run from Battery Park up past Ground Zero along the Hudson, you can't beat that route either. The other 2 options to consider are both bridges. Consider running the GW bridge and the Brooklyn bridge. I'm not sure on the Brooklyn bridge b/c I know if it very heavy with pedastrian traffic, but the GW bridge is pretty light. Shoot me a PM if you want some more specifics or are looking for a running partner in Central Park. |
