Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() In my first marathon, I hooked a toe in the grid of a steel bridge and took a nasty tumble at MILE THREE. Thankfully I know how to fall (years of riding horses!), so I sort of rolled and ended up back on my feet. Had plenty of bridge rash and, frankly, felt like crap. I was so disheartened. I gimped along until mile four, where a friend was waiting to cheer me on. I mentioned to him that I wanted to just stop, clean myself up, and go home, and he said to me "just get your a$$ back out on the road and keep running. If you stop it will be a regret, and you don't want any of those!" Later he told me that he knew I wouldn't really stop (he was right) but that he thought a little tough love might give me something to channel all that upset-ness (not a word, I know) into and free me up to keep running. As I look back on it, it was probably my worst moment during a race. But I did keep going, and I did finish, and I don't have that regret. What was a worst moment for you that, in hindsight, actually turned out to be a best? Edited by GMM 2009-08-06 1:40 PM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mine was during my only HIM, May 2008. Had a nice, relaxed swim. Got on the bike, feeling great, got to my goal pace and hung out there. Pushed it a little for the last 10 miles, but stayed on target. Got off the bike, got 0.25 miles into the run and both quads went haywire. I thought my race was over right there. But I stopped, drank a bottle of water and a bottle of GU2O, ate a gel, massaged the legs, walked for 2-3 minutes, and slowly they came back to life. I had never felt leg pain like that, yet I was focused enough to be able to do something about it. I went on to have a pretty slow 2:08 half-mary, but finished my first HIM in 5:44. It was my worst "race" moment, having to completely stop on the course, but ended up being a best "mental toughness" moment in being able to soldier on and finish. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Mine is a little different... a different perspective? Best moment- PRing my last sprint tri and running the fastest I had EVER run in a race, in 5 years. Worse moment- Finding out that I lost 3rd place in my AG (of 36 people) by 4 SECONDS. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Had a worst moment that was also a best: Couldn't run anymore in my IM and decided to walk the last 9.9 miles. Hated that moment...but as a friend pointed out, he was really impressed that I decided to finish when I could have packed it in. A best that was a worst: Recent Oly was the USAT Regional qualifier for the AG Nationals. I PR'ed and got under 2:30 for the first time. Yay me! Then found out I'd missed qualifying by 2.9 seconds...2.9 seconds! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Last year's Heart of Dixie tri in MS. After a good swim and a strong start on the bike, I fell apart about 7 miles before the bike finish. No more juice. (I was probably dehydrated.) Had a total hissy fit in transition (I know my dear sherpa hubby was totally embarrassed) and started to walk the run course. Really contemplated quitting. Stopped, took off my number belt, waited for hubby to drive by so I could get in the car. Realized I had to go to the fairgrounds anyway to turn in my chip, so put my number back on and started running slowly. Finally, got to the first mile and first water stop and started drinking water and Gatorade. Slowly felt better. Was amazed by the 2 folks running without shoes (race is point-to-point so you have to rely on others to get your running shoes to T2), and decided my little pity party was pathetic. Ran steadily, albeit, slowly to the end, rounded the last turn to the finish line with a 70-year old man sporting a Marine jersey. Said, "ooh-rah, Marine, let's get this thing done." We crossed the finish line, and he told me that was exactly what he needed right then. And you know? It really was a good day in the end. |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Ironman CDA 2008, I got behind on electrolytes and had some pretty serious cramping and wound up walking a little over half of the marathon. It was so bad I could not stand up straight. Anyway, if I hadn't had to walk I would not have got to meet so many people, and take in the beautiful scenery in CDA. The worst cramping I have ever had, most fun I have ever had, and a little lesson in nutrition. |

Member ![]() ![]() | ![]() At my first sprint (June of this year) I was about 2 miles from finishing the bike and doing way better than I expected at that point. I could tell by the riders around me (you know what you look like) that I was close to FOP. As I was coming down a hill and making a sharp turn another rider was coming up the hill and we met head on. She was taking the turn wide and I was hugging the inside, we both locked up our brakes but it was too late. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My first Triathlon with an OWS...this past May. At about the 200 meter mark...I started to panic...was absolutely SURE that I couldn't do it...right when I was about to throw up my hand and give up, this guy swimming near me asked if I was okay...he said "just relax, you can do this". I flipped over on my back, relaxed, calmed myself down...finished the swim...and the triathlon! When I crossed the finish line...I absolutely KNEW that I could accomplish much more than I ever imagined. But even more than that...someone...whoever he was...with just a few words...changed the way I would ultimately feel abut triathlons. Without his encouragement...I may have quit and never given this sport another chance. Because of that "worst moment"...I realized what I was capable of...and how important just a few words of encouragement can be. I love this sport and the people involved! |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Went on a crazy Christmas run late last year on an ice covered path with some friends and family in North-Western New Jersey, didn't know I had hurt my foot. The next weekend back home in Mississippi I ran my first ever 12K, did great but ended up limping back to the car. Stress fracture! Ortho Doc said no impact for 6-8 weeks (had to cancel my first half Mary) get on your bike and get in the pool and do some swimming. Doing triathlons never entered my mind until then! Now I love it! I am much healthier and love the roundness of tri training. And since that day, three duathlons, on mini sprint tri and a half Mary! With out that injury I would have never tried triathlons! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Being a pool swimmer forever I found myself entered into a 3 triathlon series. The first one being in mid June and no wet suit. So I did the right thing and went to the lake a few time before the race. Yeah, the water was cold but I learned that with a warm up swim I would be fine. I was right, Race day went beautiful. My swim was FOP for my age. 4 weeks later, in mid July, the water should be warmer. Well, it was but the air was cold and rainny. My swimming sucked. I couldn't even swim. I heard a kayak guy yell "I can help if you need a rest" Right then I quit! Looked up for the kayak guy but couldn't find him. So I just kept going. I felt like a real looser doing backstroke. I swam the individual medly in high school so my backstroke isn't all that bad. My swim was 3 minutes slower. (So What) My over all time was 6 minutes faster. |
