Ok, I have to ask a question - and this is not meant to be facetious.  How do you feel about people praying for frivilous things?  There was a woman on the Amazing Race who would pray for things like a good taxi driver or for her son to be able to successfully do a flip on the trapeeze.  Is this normal?  It seemed odd to me, almost sacreligious.  What do you all think?...

You can pray for anything you want but it doesn't mean that you'll get it.  I don't particulary pray for those types of things, but I do know people that do.

Sorry to answer your question, yes I think it's a bit weird to ask for simple things.

If every prayer is answered, everyone would be rich and First Place Winners.  And God ,he she,  is to busy.

If I were in that situation I would most likely pray that God would keep over my team and keep us safe or something like that.  I wouldn't pray for the specific little things like flips or good taxi drivers.  But like I said, that's just me

Yeah- some people mistake God for a vending machine and think that if they pray they'll get what they want.  If it's not in God's will/plan you won't get it no matter how much/hard you pray for it.

God isn't too busy for any prayer.  He just chooses whether or not to answer it.  And... sometimes no answer can be His answer.  And He answers on His calendar not ours.

Sorry- I just wanted to share that

My bf and I watched AR last night. We disliked the team you mentioned for the reason that you have mentioned. It's plain annoying.

Well, I am not a very religious person and don't want to get into my beliefs, but I encountered something similar a few weeks ago.

I was out of town visiting a friend of mine and decided to accompany her to church on Sunday. She belongs to a non-demominational church. The whole experience was weird to me - there was a full rock band (we're talking drum set, another percussionist, two guitarits and a bassist [all electric], a tamborine, and two people on vocals) playing music, with everyone singing along for the first hour. Then the message, as they call it, lasted an hour. This stuff was all new and different to me...I don't approve or disapprove.

In any case, the pastor/minister/whatever is apparently a born-again Christian, and while giving the message, he was giving a lot of examples of times in which God helped him. And, I was kind of dismayed when he started talking about all the little, frivolous things he had prayed for. I was always told to pray for health, safety, God to get you through something; but this guy just prayed for EVERYTHING. I had a hard time taking him seriously and because of that could never join his church.

Also, my ex-boyfriend went to a Catholic high school and they would pray before their games. He told me that they would pray to remain injury-free, but also to win. I don't think praying to win is appropriate. The funny thing - they played all other Catholic schools, so if they're all praying to win, I don't think God is going to pick sides.

I guess it all depends on how active/interventionist in daily life you think God is.  Because people pray for little things doesn't mean they think they'll get everything.  Some may believe that things happen because it's God's will, and that it's part of a larger plan for us, whether those things are good or bad.  Of course, no one really knows God's will, or if there even is a God, so what harm is there in praying for what you think God influences?

After reading the responses to my question, I figured something out.  I'm thinking out loud here... The reason that the woman on the Amazing Race irritated me so much by praying for things was her overall attitude and has nothing to do with religion after all.  I feel like I am responsible for my life and that people get where they are by working hard and doing the right thing.  This woman (and her children) seemed to think that they have no control over their own lives and turn to prayer because that is their way of dealing with "issues" no matter how small they are.  I guess it is just a different philosophy or way of living.

And by the way, to clarify my original question...I know that people can (and do) pray for whatever they want.  I was trying to understand the thought process behind people who pray for everything.

I watched part of that series and I have to say, that "religious" family seemed quite unpleasant.

I bugs me when I see people praying about winning a million bucks, mainly because I think the right thing would be to pray that the people who need it most get it.

OTOH, this family lost their father/husband only a year ago. That kind of loss can mess with people's heads, so they may be nice people who haven't been so nice since the death and will be nice once they're over it.

I pray before all my races.  But I have never prayed that I will place or win- I think that's selfish.  I usually just pray for safety, for God to calm my nervousness, and that He will give me strength when I need it.  And of course I always thank Him for giving me the physical ability, desires, and means to do the race

But if they win then they will say their prayers were answered and God was on their side.

Why is it you never hear the losers saying that God was out to get them and that if he would have been on their side they would have won??? :shrugs:

Maybe people don't say that because they understand that if they didn't get what they wanted then it wasn't in God's plan.  And they recognize that God's plan is always better than our plan.  They give God the glory when they're prayers are answered and just hang tight when they're not answered becuase they know that something good will happen out of it.  That's the only thing I can think of, if that makes sense.

I'll start my petitionary prayers with something like:

Lord, if it be your will, please...

And I'll start any intercessory prayer (prayers to a Saint asking for help) with, for example:

Holy Mother, if it be the will of your Son....

and end it with:

Through Jesus Christ, Amen.
