Veteran 263 Goodyear | Subject: Blurred vision in right eye after workout session. Hi All, Has anyone else have blurred vision in one eye after an intense workout? This is the second time it's happen. The first was after my long trail run and the other yesterday after my 60 mile somewhat intense bike ride. Also, experinced heartburn like issues on the bike after 30 miles. Did not feel good and couldn't wait to be done. I had a great workout partner for the day and was doing my best not to complain since she was so kind to take me out for the ride. It beat me up so much that I was thinking of dropping to the Olympic distance over the HIM. Was very nauseous after the ride and blurred vision only in right eye. Had a 32oz cold coconut water and drank it slowley since I felt nauseous. After, the drink I felt much better. My vision cleared in an hour. Went for my long swim after 2 hours since everything felt better. 2cups of coffee at 4:00am 1cup oatmeal;protien powder mix(1 scoop). 4:30am 2 -16oz water 4:30-5:00am 1 -8oz Red Bull 5:30am more water. 1-Banana at mile 13.5mile/water/one protien power bite. more water 1 gel with 2xcaffine 1-8oz. Gatorade G2 Finished my 24 oz - water bottle. working on my next 24oz -water bottle. Finished both 24oz water bottles. Two hours later had my PJ sandwich and 16oz G2. Master 8250 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Blurred vision in right eye after workout session. PLEASE see a doctor. My mom had symptoms like that during/after some rides and hikes and it turned out she was having TMI's (mini-strokes). She thought they were migraines or dehydration. Could easily be either--migraines can feature vision problems in one eye and nausea, but there is usually some degree of pain as well, usually on one side of the head. If migraine, maybe triggered by hormones, caffeine, and/or dehydration. Two coffees plus Red Bull plus the caffeine gel to me sounds like a lot of caffeine, but I wouldn't automatically assume that's the cause. It apparently can be hard to tell the difference between "complex migraines" (where there are visual and sometimes other neurological issues as well as headache) and TMI's without medical tests. TMI's cause brain damage over time and indicate underlying medical issues (in her case, high cholesterol due to genetic factors), so you need to rule that out. In either case, it sounds like you're not happy riding or safe driving home. In one case my mom almost lost control of the car with similar symptoms. Please, check it out with a doctor. |

Master 8250 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Blurred vision in right eye after workout session. Correction--the acronym is TIA (transient ischemic attack). Not enough caffeine in MY system this AM. Please don't assume this can't be it because you don't have obvious risk factors--my mother was relatively slim and fit, avid cyclist, healthy diet all her life. Luckily it was caught before serious brain damage resulted. Now her doctor thinks that some of her earlier "migraines", which started in her early 50's, might have actually been TIA's. While older people are more at risk, there are other risk factors that can be "invisible" like high blood pressure or cholesterol (which can be genetic and cause problems even with healthy lifestyle), malformed blood vessels, etc. Edited by Hot Runner 2012-04-01 9:39 PM |

Member 78 Pineville, North Carolina | Subject: RE: Blurred vision in right eye after workout session. Go to the doctor. You may not think it's something serious, and it may end up being nothing serious, but go to the doctor. In 1996, I went to the doctor because I was getting a strange feeling in my chest when exercising. I was 32 years old. I thought it was a chest cold, but it wasn't anything I had experienced before. My doctor sent me to the hospital for observation, and it ended up being a 95% blockage in my right coronary artery. I am now fine and have no physical restrictions, but if I hadn't gone to the doctor things might not have turned out so well. I don't want to panic you, but I want you to go and be sure it is nothing serious...please take care...

Veteran 263 Goodyear | Subject: RE: Blurred vision in right eye after workout session. Update: I had another EKG, Echo-cardio and Echo-Cartoid Artery screening. My EKG showed an abnormal rise before the normal heart beat (possilbe Gallop, athlete heart, or Bradycardia syndrome). He said It might indicate a large or thicken muscle on the heart ( heart muscle adapts to the physical demanding training-never heard of it?) Also, the doc had me tested for TIA and possible blockage of the cartoid arteries in my neck. Anyway, Friday is the update of all the tests that I took during the week. Has anyone heard of any of these issue with the heart? Or has anyone went for any of these test? If so, what was the outcome? Edited by SunshineEstrella 2012-04-11 6:17 PM |

Master 8250 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Blurred vision in right eye after workout session. Make sure your doctor understands that you do endurance sports and/or find a Dr. who's familiar with athletes as well as cardiology. Some symptoms can be benign (such as slow resting heart rate compared to unathletic people) and normal in endurance athletes, but some are not. It is also possible to be an endurance athlete who has a heart problem. Get it checked out and don't assume it's just because you're an athlete, but do let the doctor know your background. |

Veteran 263 Goodyear | Subject: RE: Blurred vision in right eye after workout session. So, the doctor (cardiologist) cleared me to do the HIM. He didn't find anything wrong with my Echo-cardio or Cartoid arteries. So, I finished the HIM with intense chest tightness all around my upper torso ( like a elephant sitting on my chest. This was so scary and it hurt really, really bad. Just kept telling myself the cardiologist cleared me and that I can finish this race ) and the blurred vision in my right eye all came back during the run portion of the HIM. I finished and was pleased that I didn't drop dead....ugh.... Had a big smile on my face and lots of giggels after I finished! The chest pain disappeared but the week of recovery hit hurt. Called my cardiologist to give him the update and he ordered a stress test and said he thinks it's nerological. Can't get in until May 11th! Then wait another week for a follow up. I found a nerologist on my own and went to see him. He ordered a EEG for June...why so long....ugh... He took blood test for what ever reason... Need to get to work.....update later. Master 8250 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Blurred vision in right eye after workout session. That is really, really scary. Can't believe you did a HIM, esp. the swim, with this still unresolved. Yes, it can take a long time for doctors to figure things out, but cardio/neurological symptoms are not something to play with. I don't see how neurological issues could cause chest pain. More likely heart or respiratory problems, or possibly some kind of panic attack/anxiety that might be unrelated to the other issues. Not an MD so no idea what the relationship is to the vision issue, but I've been through enough health scares with my parents and I really hope you take some easy/off time until you get to the bottom of this! |

The hardening or thickening of the heart walls is pretty common among long-time endurance athletes. I have it...my cardiologist told me to just come back every 5-7 years for a check-up but otherwise cleared to do everything. I also have a fairly large heart. When I'm in really good shape my RHR is like 38, and it's almost impossible for me to get it over 160 (43 years old). |

Has anyone heard of any of these issue with the heart? Or has anyone went for any of these test? If so, what was the outcome? I've had all those tests plus more. In quick summary: I was born with a congenital defect called a biscuspid aortic valve. It was first discovered as a heart murmur when I was 5 years old and I ended up having it surgically replaced with a mechanical valve twelve years ago at age 47. Over the years my leaky valve caused my heart to work harder and resulted in significant enlargement of my left ventricle. One of the symptoms I developed prior to my surgery were optical migranes which were painless but caused double vision and blind spots in my field of vision. Not trying to imply that you have similar problems to what I did, but that you shouldn't minimize or ignore your symptoms. You need to keep pursuing things with you doctor until you find the root cause of your issues. Heart problems are nothing to mess around with. Hope it is something relatively minor and you can get it fixed. Mark

I will let you now what happens in the next couple of visits to the doctors next week. I wouldn't want to wish this kind of pain on anyone...ugh... I am taking it easy and doing short runs and bike. Nothing pass an hour and going slow pace. |

Veteran 263 Goodyear | Subject: RE: Blurred vision in right eye after workout session. Everyone here on this subject has been awesome and I thank you for listening. I had so many test done (overly done) and the specialist can't find the cause. The only thing the specialist told me was (one neurologist in Scottsdale) I had Hemicranial Continua attacks. Cardiologist said, benign heart murmurs. The pulmonary specialist said exercise induced asthma. So, I am assuming that the exercise induced blurred vision in my right eye is due to HC. I did the Tour de Cure 81 mile ride past weekend and the right eye was severely blurred (the worst time ever). Like looking through a very dirty dusty window. No other symptoms but did have stabbing right head pain which again the neurologist said was a classic symptom of HC (comes and goes throughout my days anyway). I took in the correct potassium, salts, water, foods and etc... and felt great after except the annoying blurred vision. So my next event is April, 13 &14 Leadman half Tri AZ. Wonder if I should set up an appointment with the Ophthalmologist and time my long ride just before? That way he can look inside my eye while blurred. The only thing is I will be all sweaty and gross. The vision returns within two hours to normal. Thank you for listening. |
