Yet another example of the barbarism of horse racing in full public view yesterday as a horse is put to death in the middle of the track.  I believe we had this debate last year when Barbaro (i think) was put to death as well.  Rich people and their animal games.  And to top it all off, 2 of the 5 owners of the winning horse yesterday could not attend the race because they were in a Kentucky jail awaiting trial.

And for what?  So rich people can have braggin rights and millions of others can fuel their gambling urges since horse racing is 95% about gambling and 5% about boosting a wealthy ego.  Wonder what public opinion would be if ESPN had a camera in there when the vet administered the lethal injection.

Pathetic...IMHO of course.

Wow...a serious criticism.

I was gonna say... I hate horse racing 'cause it means that ESPN bumps college football to ESPN Classic, which my cable doesn't include.

But your point is good too.

Imagine if they euthanized like in the old days when they'd actually euthanize the horse with a shotgun and the crowd would hear the blast?

I am curious as to "Rich people and their animal games".  Do some here view Professional sports in the same fashion?  Instead of actual animals, the athletes themselves are the expendable commodity tossed to the curb when injured or no longer performing.  Just a thought...

Good point.  However I would argue that pro athletes are tossed to the curb with a substanital bank roll that they got when they were performing.  The champion horse still eats the same hay as every other horse.

Actually, Barbaro was saved from being euthanized, and they tried to reconstruct his foot.  After months of rehabilitation they had to eventually put him down.  During this time I know that the owners actually brought in feeding grass from the paddock where he was raised. They had a great love for the animal. Very sad.

I am not sure I would criticize horse racing so harshly.  They do take very good care of the animals.  However, I think that the problem arises with a highly bred horse, that due to it's musculature and fine bones, is susceptible to very debilitating injury. If a horse comes up lame, there is little that can be done to save it.

I would challenge that argument.  Only the very talented, or very lucky, few will ever retire after a long career with a substantial bank roll.

Those who do leave with a substantial bank roll are, often, those who choose to retire of their own accord versus those who retire because of injury.

Here's an interesting article from a year ago:
http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/super/2006-01-28-retirement-perils_x.htm

A couple of key statements:

In fact, 78% of all NFL players are divorced, bankrupt or unemployed two years after leaving the game...

Once the career is over, ex-pros usually spend a couple of years and significant amounts of their savings trying to stay in shape and get back into the league, Ruettgers says. All the while they don't cut back on their high-end lifestyle, which increasingly drains their money.

Good point.  ESPN does stories on folks like that from time to time.  Riches to Rags stories if you will.

The one counterargument I might raise is the issue of will.  Horses don't have much of a choice in the matter, meanwhile, the athletes do.  No one "makes" them get a $150,000 car when they could "settle" on a BMW 7 series.  No one forces that 3rd bottle of $500 dollar wine onto their tab.  Many of those folks wind up like that because of poor choices on their own part.

Actually, on second thought, I'm sure some probably are victimized by fair-weather friends, predatory sales-people/agents, etc... but still, there comes a point when you have to take responsibility when you're burning through 100's of 1000's if not millions of dollars a year.

I understand your anger.  I am the former owner of two ex-racehorses that went on to wonderful post racing careers.  That being said, I've seen the bad end of mistreated horses (they won't let men near them, won't let people touch their ears, scared of anything that resembles a whip) but I do LOVE watching a horse run.  When I know a horse truly loves what it does and gets the best of care, a nd that is possible in the racing field, as evidenced by the training facility I got my last horse from, it is truly incredible to watch them.  I'll sit at the track early morning to watch them work out.  The treatment can always be better, but the same argument could be made for college athletes that blow out their knees.  We just don't put humans "out of their misery".  Its b/c you can't tell a horse to take it easy for four months, unfortunately...

Now I am glad I didn't watch the race. After Barbaro, I just don't think I can stomach it. Those horses are all so beautiful. It makes me so sad to think that they could get a life ending injury out there running, and not all of them get the love that Barbaro's owners clearly felt for him.

Horses are so beautiful and smart and can be so loving. That's all I wanted to say. I'm saddened that this happened this weekend.

If that's accurate where were they shipping the 42 horses in the cattle trailer that crashed and killed or lead to the death of (I think) 16horses?  I could have sworn the news report I heard said they were being shipped to a slaughter house.

I'm sure there are better links than this out there but I'm pressed for time:  http://www.thehorse.com/viewarticle.aspx?ID=7768

They were going to an auction in Minneapolis.  That's not to say they were going to a slaughterhouse in Minneapolis.  They may well have been bought there, shipped outside the US, and slaughtered.

Professional athletes have the opportunity to say no.

Professional athletes have a union to help them.

Professional athletes don't get sent to the slaughter house for food in foreign countries when the quit winning.

Professional athletes aren't breed to the point that their legs are so brittle they can't support themselves.
