Subject: LBS being unreasonable or is it me?
So I went to look at bikes today and came away a bit annoyed by the experience.  After my "fit" I rode one bike and came back not impressed enough to buy.  The other model I want to look at is in stock but not built up in my size, so I ride the next size up to get the idea.  I like it enough to consider coming back once the smaller one is built, but I make it clear this is one is not the right size.  After getting all kinds of assurances that it can be adjusted to me, (despite being told flat out this was not the right size for me 30 minutes prior) the salesperson goes to check on the other bike.  They come back and I'm told they will need a deposit in order for the other bike to be built.  Am I wrong to think this was totally unreasonable?

No way I'd throw down the deposit. If my LBS did me like that I'd take my business elsewhere.

no, they should be willing to build up a bike for you to test ride...and if you don't buy, it goes on the showroom floor...if htey want your business that is...it's not like you're asking for something for free. Plus you're getting conflicting answers.

No way would I pay a deposit for a bike I'd never even ridden.  Take your business elsewhere.

Sounds like an over-zealous salesperson.  I'd go elsewhere.  No reason at all to pay a deposit for a bike that they already own that is just not put together.

If they already have the bike in stock (albeit not assembled), there is not really any extra expense to them in putting it together.  Obviously at some point they would have to assemble it to sell, so they are being unreasonable.

After all, if you were willing to buy a bike unridden, why would you go to the LBS when it would be a lot cheaper to via an internet dealer like BikesDirect?

You shouldn't have to put down a deposit to have a bike built, fitted and spec'ed out for you when test-riding at a LBS.  BUT, if you DON'T buy any bike from that store at the time of the fitting, it's fair for them to charge you for the time and labor to go through the fitting and evaluation process.

Inside Out Sports in Raleigh, NC built and fitted FOUR bikes for me at the same time.  It took me six hours of test riding to determine which one was best for me and I bought it.  If I hadn't bought it at the shop that day, I would have paid the labor bill for all the work they put into helping me find the right bike for me and fit it the best for me.

"Buy the bike shop; not the bike" is  the old saying.  Find somewhere else to go or speak to the owner if this is the only shop in town.  You deserve better.

Bet you $5 that indeed they don't really have your size in stock. How profitable is the business? Are they in a credit crunch and need your "deposit" to get a vendor to ship to them? On the way down, businesses lose their lines of credit and manufacturers and vendors pull away shipping product without payment guarantees. If they sell you the one they already own, they don't face laying out even more cash.

If the story IS true that the correct size is downstairs in a box, the shop employee is either a dolt or uneducated that selling you the correct size bike is good for business. Plus, that 30minutes to assemble the one in the box is something they'll need to do at SOME point in time.

Either get the owner to wait on you or find another shop. As another poster put it, that long-term relationship matters quite a bit. Or find yet another bike which you love even more.

Absolutely, it is unreasonable.

Send me the deposit and buy the larger bike fitted to you

Seriously, I echo the sentiments here, If there were going to order the bike or something, maybe but not to just build it up.

This LBS would not get my business. EVER. Not a bike or even a CO2 refill. Go somewhere else.

I work at a shop and it sounds like the salesman is either: 1. trying to blow you off because he thinks you're not serious about buying and is an a-hole or 2. they don't really have it in stock and would have to special order it in that size.

I would talk to the owner and find out if they do have it in stock because you're interested in the bike but don't know if it will fit you. Buying a bike is a big deal and if they want any of your business then they should be willing to build a bike they already have in stock; like someone else said, if they build it for you to try it'll go on the floor after it's built. (especially if that size is not already on the floor)

Did you pay for the fitting?

If so you are in a tough spot.

If you didn't spend any  more go to another shop. Many shops will adjust a few bikes in your price range to fit you and let you test ride them. I did this at a shop and they built up the bike, set it up to fit me and even changed out the stems so they would fit better. I did pay money for a fitting. I didn't end up buying a bike from them as they were expensive and would charge the higher list price with no discount. We bought a kids bike from them to recoup the fit fee..which was credited only when you purchased a bike.

O.K. I'm a newbie, what is an LBS? I'm thinking that it is a s... bike store. I would take my business elsewhere and then ride my new bike to their store to buy a very low price item. This may be tacky, but somehow bring up how much it cost. They don't seem to care about if the bike really fits as much as getting a sale.

Thanks for the replies.  This was really just one bad aspect of an overall poor experience.  I put fit in quotes because it consisted of quickly measuring my inseam.  Second, despite saying I was a beginner, the first bike I was directed to was $5000, because "there's nothing wrong with buying the bike for the triathlete you aspire to be".  I really had to insist that I did not need a full carbon DA set-up before we moved lower down the line.  I've honestly felt less pressured buying a car.  Suppose I'll take the money I've set aside for the bike, fitting, pedals, shoes and new helmet and spend it elsewhere.

Wow, yeah, I'd definitely take my money elsewhere and let the ownership of that store know that you did.  By doing a poor job of servicing you and pushing you toward a bike that was out of your price range and current needs instead of getting a couple thousand dollars they get none.

After reading this, no doubt that's a good move..... a lot, I would even say most, are not like that.
