Cycling Guru ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My lovely wife wanted to get me one for our anniversary today. I've never been a huge fan of ultra-equipped gadgets, but it does sound really interesting from a data collection standpoint? Why would you get one, or why did you? Likes, dislikes? Positive aspects, negative ones? |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My wife has a 305 and I have had a 205 for about 9 months. When the 405 first came out my wife had to have one. She spent about 2 hours getting very frustrated with it and took it back. The 305/205 are very user friendly and for the most part provide the same data. The 405 looks better but requires reading the manual and investing some time into figuring the thing out. The bezel ring that asks as "buttons" didn't seem to work very well either. Maybe when you got the "touch" down it would be better. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Sorry, I don't have an answer for you, just a question... How on earth does one get their wife to want them to have ultra-equipped gadgets? How many anniversaries does that take, because I just had my first one a couple of days ago and I'm pretty sure that not even the most under-equipped gadgets made my wife's list of potential presents. Are you the luckiest man alive? |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My personal feeling is that the single biggest advantage to the Garmin 405 is that it makes the 305 and the 205 a lot cheaper ![]() I have not been hearing good things from runners who have gone to the 405 from earlier models. The biggest beef seems to be the display and the UI. I would cast my vote for the 305 as it provides the greatest amount of info both during and after a workout. (405 is good for post-workout info to be sure) |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Don't get one. My understanding is that the 405 does not have a multi sport function. Get a 305 instead. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() The only advantage to the 405 (other than it makes the other version cheaper) is it can be used as a regular watch. Personally I don't care that my 305 is slightly bigger than my IM watch. I only wear it to train. In the future (if anyone at garmin is watching) I would like to see a truely waterproof version along with a battery to last at least 24 hrs. Until that happens I will keep my 305. |

Pretty much the same for me. A couple of weeks ago I thought I'd lost my 305 and was trying to decide between the 405 and 305 for a replacement. While I liked the size of the 405 for being able to use it as a watch, I wasn't sure how well it work as a bike computer due to the size of the characters and only being able to have 3 data fields displayed at a time. Fortunately, my 305 got returned to me so I didn't have to make the decision, but I was leaning towards getting another 305. |

Okay, thanks all, that's kind of what I wanted to hear. My old boss from the bike shop actually was trying to sell me on the 705 for cycling also. I'll read up more on the 305 and see whether I like it or not. It would pretty much only get used for training, but we'll see if we even go that route to begin with. |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Rick, what do you use to train on the bike? I have a 305, which is good for multisport, runs and riding. I do not have a bike mount. I just leave it on my wrist which means I only look at my cadence occasionally. I was thinking of getting an Edge just for the bike. Sooooo, what do you use on the bike? |

Cycling Guru ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I use a Cateye Astrale on both bikes for cadence/speed. |

Not a Coach ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I got a 305 for Christmas last year. Didn't ask for it and probably wouldn't have gotten it for myself, but I have to admit that I like being able to check my pace/distance during a run no matter where I am (don't need it so much for routes I do frequently and already have a good idea of pace/distance). For the bike, I wear it on my wrist and just use it to map my ride out later (get climbing data, etc.). If you don't need/care about the HR, you could just get a 205. I've used it for a duathlon, but not for a tri since you can't swim with it--can't see the reason to bother putting it on my wrist in the middle of a race. It's a nice toy. |

As I am running to my bike I take it out of the baggie and snap it to my bike first think. Doesn't take that long and I get data on the swim also.I got a 305 for Christmas last year. Yeah, I know it can be done. But I don't need the data that bad. They'll tell me my time after the race. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() DH purchased a 405 for me for our anniversary in June. I admit that I have not taken full advantage of it. For me, it's basically a pacing buddy during outdoor runs and that's it. Previously I was using a Polar RS200SD with footpod. It served me well during tri b/c the watch is waterproof; I just hated messing with the footpod during a tri. Even though I had the Garmin 405 during my last tri, I opted to wear the Polar instead. I just can't be bothered to try to strap on the Garmin after a swim. Too much of a pain. That being said, I like the whole GPS thing. I like not having to calibrate a footpod. I like the size of the 405 compared to previous models. If it weren't for the smaller size (and more 'watch-like look') I don't think I would have ever hinted around to DH about it. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I got the 305 because of the longer battery life, buttons (the 405 uses a touch system that people don't all seem to like), and the multisport feature. It's interesting to be able to go different routes and see how far I've gone, and both inspiring and frustrating to see my pace. Not much use if I;m just going around my neighborhood, but when I venture out, it's very useful. I've only had it a few weeks, but I am pleasantly suprised by how much I like it. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Or...you could get a Polar S625X that you can actually use as a watch, don't have to charge and swim with. Just saying. Plus there is no losing or waiting for satellites. BUT, the downloading graphs and routes is kinda cool. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() no reason to sell you on it, bc the 305 is still better |
