Streaming eyes - do I need glasses?

There have been a lot of time when I've ridden and I'll see/hear a bug or some kind of debris hitting my glasses at 20 + mph. I always wonder if I wasn't wearing my sunglasses would that something would be lodged in my eyeball. I've got the $35 Uvex from Costco with the 4 interchangeable lenses (polarized grey, polarized brown, yellow and clear). -Nick |

| Subject: RE: Streaming eyes - do I need glasses? Sam's Club has a 12 pack of either smoke (dark gray) or clear glasses for $24/each. I got these for cycling as they're $2.00 each and if I forget a set changing a flat, have a set bounce out of my hand and I step on them, or other hazard befalls them I've got 11 more pair. I wear Ray Bans and Revos for everything else but I cannot see dropping a $200 pair of glasses or leaving them on the side of the road and while cycling there are way too many things that can go wrong with glasses. I won't cycle without a pair of glasses of some sort though, bugs, rocks, bits of metal, etc flying into your eye does not sound like fun and $2.00 is REALLY cheap insurance that it's a whole lot less likely. |

I had to buy a pair the morning of my last race because I had left mine (I wear my cycling glasses as regular sunglasses) on the table at dinner the night before. I can't stand the watery-eyes effect and don't ever want to get a bug lodged in my eye again if I can easily avoid it. |

I tend to ride with the clear lenses unless it is really sunny just so I can easily make 2-way eye contact with people in cars and on the bike paths, etc. I picked up something in the range of this: http://www.performancebike.com/shop/profile.cfm?SKU=23051&subcatego... . Good coverage around the eye and interchangable lenses are the things to look for, in my opinion. |

I've also had a bug fly right into my glasses. I have a pair of Tifosis - they were reasonable (as opposed to upwards of $100 for Oakleys and such), and have three pairs of interchangeable polarized lenses. My ex, who was otherwise a total cycling snob spent NO money on sunglasses - he'd go to expos and get a couple pairs of the cheapie ones for like $10 a pair. Then if he broke or lost a pair, he didn't care. |

I wear mine for eye protection first and comfort second. Polarized lenses will help cut down glare, but make reading your computer/watch hard. If you ride in the dark/poor weather, get a clear lens. They also help with the watery eyes from fast descents. |

Champion 19812 MA | Subject: RE: Streaming eyes - do I need glasses? I have had this issue and talked to my eye doc. about it. My eyes tear a lot even with wrap style bike glasses. It turns out tearing eyes is symptom of dry eyes. I have OTC drops to help but still they tear. In my last IM bike I had salt streaks all over my face from the outside corners of my eyes. Glasses may help but that might not be enough. |

I might as well be legally blind without them and can't imagine ending race or training without them. Also help when stuck in rain shower. Happened 2 weeks ago with downpour and litterally could not see more than 50 feet in from of me and would have much worse if glasses did not block most of the rain so I could see. |

But I made the choice not to at Lake Placid this year because it was pouring most of the time. I should have jsut picked up some clear or yeallow lenses because descending at close to 40 in pelting rain is a good way to crash since I had to seriously squint or it hurt! |

That being said, my eyes still tear up badly...on every single ride, regardless of the weather conditions. I love my Tifosi Carbon Slip with the High-Speed Red Fototec lenses...awesome glasses for a reasonable price! |

I found that the fishing department of a sporting goods store will often have reasonably priced shades that are polarized as well as UV protected. I wouldn't ride without sunglasses. A bug or a pebble in the eye could easity cause a crash. |

If it's very early or getting late and I'm on the bike, I have a pair of amber lense glasses I got at the LBS for about $14. I will run w/out glasses, but I prefer not to ride w/out eye protection. |
