Swim
Comments: I was in the last wave of the swim. My inability to overcome the jitters came to fruition on the swim. After several attempts of trying to get into a groove and find my breathing, i opted for backstroke. Once I did, it was actually a delight!! I looked up at the sky and the trees and thought...life is grand. My backstroke is not too bad and it is totally effortless. I passed a few people. After rounding the last buoy and coming in for the homestretch, I turned over and did freestyle in. What would you do differently?: Get in the water for a longer warm-up to get my groove!! Transition 1
Comments: I of course had to stop and kiss my kids and chat alittle to them and friends. I kept moving as I did, but was not really rushing things. What would you do differently?: Run to transition from water. Bike
Comments: The bike course was challenging and kept my mind ticking. I'm getting better at the gears and I felt really good on the bike. This is where I am seeing the most improvement. I actually got to say "On your Left" a few times, very cool. I handled the hills well, albeit sucking wind. What would you do differently?: If I had a cadence display, perhaps I would be able to raise the avg pace? Otherwise really, I think I did well. Transition 2
Comments: Stopped to kiss the kids again, lol. They are my saviours, I had to!!! Transition was great. I had great spots for my bike in both T1 and T2. What would you do differently?: Can't think of anything, except try to talk less. Run
Comments: I was doing a very slow pace, but I was in the groove and felt great that I never went to a walk. Much room for improvement, but I was happy! Lots of water stops, really nice volunteers, lots of kids involved helping as well. I walked a few steps in the water stops to drink. I can't seem to master the run and drink thing. What would you do differently?: Maybe take better advantage of the downhills with a slightly larger stride? Post race
Warm down: Great massage. What limited your ability to perform faster: The ol' mental game on pre-race and swim. Otherwise overall, I just have to step the training up a few notches. Event comments: There were not really any amazing post race activities, but there it was stocked well with gatorade, water, bagels, fruit, and eggs with bacon and sausage (a brunch as it were). Again, the volunteers were great, the race organized extremely well, the course beautiful and challenging, and really beautiful finishing medals. If I had to push to find suggestions for improvement? I'd say use the "regular" buoys for the swim, and maybe have a bit more happening post race, but this really isn't necessary. I had a great massage and myself, family and friends lots to eat. I woke up at 4:30, a half hour before planning to. I had a really nervous stomach and went through that horrid ritual of jitters and not wanting to go through with the race, that i thought I left behind last year. I had two other races this past year that I was fine for. I just don't know what got into this ol' noggin. I woke my kids and Peter up at 5:30. Brought a travel mug of coffee and toast with peanut butter for the road. I could barely get 3 bites down, but the coffee was great.
There were two transitions areas to set up. All was very smooth and I can't say enough about how spectacular the race volunteers were, and the organization of the race.
I went into water for a warm-up swim and felt so stifled, ahead of myself and sort of a panic attack. Not really panic attack, but just couldn't get a groove..as if i've never swam before!!
