Subject: Hey Floridians!

I just found out that there is some possibility (maybe small, maybe big, I'm just not sure yet) of me moving to South Florida for my job. I must admit this is kind of a weird and scary possibility to me. I'm a life-long western/mountain girl. It was weird for me to move to the town I'm currently in because it's next to the mountains instead of being in them! LOL!

It looks like the town (city?) I may be in is Naples (maybe?). Ok, so soothe me. What's it like there? What's there for outdoor recreation? What sort of people/attitude prevails?

Thanks guys!

:-P

Median resident age: 60.7 years
Median household income: $65,641 (year 2000)
Median house value: $416,000 (year 2000)

So I'll be about 40 years younger than everyone else and won't have a snowball's chance in hell of being able to buy a house. But on the bright side:

Probably next spring. Chances are, we'll go SOMEWHERE next spring, but we don't know where. This is the one distinct possibility, there are infinite indistinct ones!

You will love it here!!  I'm a born and raised Florida girl, and think you people who live in the cold are crazy!!!  There are plenty of training days, even when it's raining, it's good practice for tris!!  You usually ride after the swim, so you're wet anyway!!

Naples is a nice area, a little pricey and lots of old people, but you're right close to the beach.  That is a great trade!!  And did I mention, there is an amazing school a little north of here, with an amazing football (although this year is an exception) to route for on Saturdays??!!!  GO GATORS!!!

BTW, my husband and son are HUGE Star Wars fans, to the point that we're going to Indiana in March for the convention.  They love that you have Yoda's quote on your signature!!  When I have a bad training day, my son usually quotes me that line.

LOL! Awesome.... That's what I tell my boyfriend a lot. Ex: when I leave the house in the morning, I'll ask him, "Hey could you wash a few dishes." He'll say, "Yeah, honey, I'll try." Then I say, in my best Soup Nazi voice (yeah, I find soup nazi works better than a yoda voice) "There is no try! There is only do!" And leave. :-)

I should change my avatar back to Yoda. Gives me credibility. ;-)

Well, I thought FL might be kinda cool for a few years. You know, make friends with some elderly folks, some alligators (I'd be working in Big Cypress!) and whatnot. Well, the forementioned boyfriend sent me this email: "Naples sounds like a place that is not that great and very expensive. The job sounds interesting, but if we want to be out west why not wait until a job opens up out here instead of sweltering in south Florida next summer? South Florida is a bit better than Nebraska, but not much. We can talk more about it later." Lame. The man seems to think I'm super-established in my career and can choose only presitigious mountain towns filled with highly-educated, outdoor oriented 20- and 30-somethings! Oh well.... Sorta up to my bosses more than me.

Thanks for the good review! I'm from AZ and CO, so I'm sure the first summer would be hell. But hey, swamps are really cool! Beaches are nice! And I've never been in a hurricane! Wait, um, hurricanes aren't good things.... especially when you're 6 feet above sea level....

Hurricanes are only another time to throw a party!!!  Our entire neighborhood is blocked off and we have a huge hurricane party in the street!!  Ok, so you have to run to Home Depot and buy plywood for your windows, and stock water, and canned goods, make sure you have gas in the generator, BUT....did I mention the party???!!!

You will probably be quite warm here in the summer.  I love it!!  I would so much rather be hot than cold.  If it drops below about 75, I'm freezing!!

If the boyfriend doesn't like Florida, there are PLENTY of lonely, RICH, men in Naples looking for a young, fit chick!!!!

i used to vacation in naples as a kid (grandmas house).  from what i remember many years ago, its a retirement community - hence the 60 median age, beautiful beaches, nice neiborhoods, BUT seems to be traffic conjested around town (compared to akron, ohio)...i think it is still rapidly growing.

I'm from Charlotte county just north of Naples. My job actually encompasses Collier county (Naples) You've hit all the bad points of Naples, it is expensive and there are alot of "blue hairs" but S.W. Fla. has a great deal to offer. Weather... today it is in the low 80's. Beaches...some of the best beaches in the world are on the Gulf coast. You can do all of the things you love to do in the Mountains just in a different setting. ( I went to school in Western Wa. so I know a little about mountains) You can hike and boat, sea kayaking is popular, loads of wildlife stuff, we have black bear, Fla. panthers, aligators. Naples isn't that far from the Everglades and not too far from Miami. Just across Aligator Alley.
Great sea food...fresh gulf shrimp, stone crab, and conch. The Fla. Keys are a doable weekend trip from Naples.
The summers are brutal hot, but that's why we have AC! Ft. Myers has a sprint tri every year as does Boca Grande, both a relatively short drive north from Naples. And Hurricanes they hardly ever hit here...Oh wait that's right one hit my town directly this year... Well I did say hardly ever.

How many months of the year would you say a Coloradan would describe the weather as "unbearable"? AC is all well and good, if you're inside. This job would be rather heavy on the field work. I can concentrate fieldwork into the more tolerable months, but I'll likely still be spending ~2 days/wk in the field.

You're gonna love the weather here...other than the humidity (doesn't colorado have that though?) Friday it's supposed to be 73 and people are already busting out the heavy sweat shirts and jackets! But yeah all year round trainings great! I think there was one day last year where I deemed it too cold to workout outisde b/c I don't own "winter training gear" As far as attitude I'm not from south florida but here in Oviedo everybody's extremely laid back (or so people have told me) Great place to retire!

Actually, you just made it sound awesome! Unfortunately, my boyfriend is kinda being a butt about it. But I sent him this and hopefully he'll be a little more positive.... However, I've got to give him veto power, because if he doesn't like it, I'm going to hear about it constantly! LOL!

The sea kayaking sounds awful nice!

Hi

I just moved here about a year ago. I'm from the northeast where they actually have seasons. The summer is HOT. Training for my first tri in the summer was not fun. On the up side you can train year round...and play golf. Also you don't have to shovel snow or worry about driving on black ice. On the down side you have to fly somewhere to ski. The hurricaines were a bummer, but we have those on Cape Cod too. It is a really active area to live in. I'm a bit north of Naples and don't know that particular area well. The beaches are great and you can take up sailing. Almost everyone is a transplant, so people tend to be friendly. I like the Tampa area a lot. Aside from no seasons and no snow/skiing I really like it here. I do admit I don't like the heat much in the summer. Hope this helps -S

South Florida is a great place to live and train. I am Miami born and raised (that's about 2 hours east of Naples). The west coast beaches are beautiful. The summer's are very hot and humid. So is the Spring. The weather cools a bit in the Fall, and we occasionally get in the 60's during the winter. There are so many cool things to do year round - including the few already mentioned here. There's also scuba diving - which is great in the Keys (only about 2 - 3 hours from Naples - Key West is about another 2 hours away). There's also Disney and the whole Orlando vacation area. I think you'll love it.

If you make it to Miami - you gotta have some Cuban food. It's the best.

Well, the boy vetoed FL. Which I guess is fine. I'm rather intrigued by the prospect of going there, but if we encounter much hardship or Eric doesn't like if for some reason, I don't want it to come down on me. It's certainly in my best interest to go somewhere he wants to go. Plus, he's been there before and thought it was hell and I've never been. We tend to have similar tastes, so I suppose I should trust him....

Thanks for all your help guys! And don't tell me how nice it is there today! LOL! It's in the 30's here today and just GRAY. Ick....

Get your bike tires pumped up and let's ride!!!  You'll have to let us Floridians know when you get here.  Are you signing up for the St. Anthony's tri in April?

Unfortunately, I won't know the timing of things until much later, so I don't think I'll be able to sign up for St. Anthony's before it fills up. :-( But I'm sure, if it's in the neighborhood, I'll be volunteering and drinking beers with y'all!!!!

I'm kinda getting excited! FL should be fun!
