Subject: How BAD were the Superbowl commercials?
For the most part I thought that the Superbowl TV commercials were a sad unimaginitve bunch this year.
The career builder.com "working with monkeys" was OK once but after 3 or 4 of the same ilk they got old. I got sick of the Ford Mustang "Fargo" spot after the second showing. The Beer ads this year were terrible.
I enjoyed the "inaction hero" spot but I've forgotten which deodorant it was for. As a Brit the idea of Aretha Franklin scoring a try in a rugby game (MBNA credit cards) made me laugh a lot.
Anyone got any others

Ian

I LOVED the one with the white cat that knocked over the tomato sauce and the guy picked up the cat and had a knife in his hand and the woman walked in....what the commercial was for, I have no idea.  but it was funny

The cat one was my favorite as well, but that could be because I have a white cat and could definately see that happening.

Other than that they weren't very good.

The only 'good' commercial, IMHO, was the Salute to the Troops (in the airport).  I did like the cat commercial, and the MC Hammer one (I'd have tossed him back too!)

I concur!  Granted I am a bit partial to the military salutes, but that one was the best by far.  I am usually very critical of any type of salute like that, but that one was done in very good taste!  Actually the entire pregame salute to the true "war heroes" was very moving!!

I have a bad feeling about that troops in the airport one. I just think that it's going to come out that those weren't real troops or that the ad agency planted some people in the airport concourse to lead the applause.
Then people will be disgusted and cry exploitation or something. I hope I'm wrong but somethings just didn't seem right.

No, I'm sure they were actors.  The uniforms were 'sterile' (no nametags, service branch, insignia, etc.)  Still, our troops are all volunteers, and I feel we should thank them for their sacrifices (ok, so I'm biased, being ex-military).

OK the Salute the Troops Commercial -

It was a very nice commercial, and the message was heartfelt and genuine.

But I never thought for ONE second that it wasn't filmed with actors. The sterilized uniforms for one, but having grown up in the military and seeing boatloads of sailors come home from sea, IN ADDITION to having been at airports countless of times when troops have traversed the concourse - that's not what I've experienced as a reaction from the public........I've been in Bangor ME countless of times when they're there about to hop the pond, and........well.......regardless, I think that it was definitely a fictional situation!

I did forget about that commercial though. I am changing my vote for best from Saucy Cat to Salute the Troops.

I'd bet a buck it was 100% scripted, choroegraphed, staged, and acted, still didn't stop me from getting a little choked up watching it.

Concur with bear!  Definitely scripted and with actors...but who cares!  As they say..It is the thought that counts!  And that one put a tear in my eye!

I didn't see the salute to the Troops when it first aired but a friend just sent me the link for it.  Deffinately staged but not too far from reality.

Here is the link: http://www.herosalute.com/states/big_game_ad.html

I am here to tell you that our welcome back from Iraq when on my two week "R&R" trip was very similar.  No huge groups of people standing and clapping like in the commercial but there was a steady flow of pats on the back, shaking hands, and thank you's both in the terminals and on the flights.  My regular coach seat was automatically upgraded for free to first class by the airline and we were thanked on the PA systems on the airplane.  On the final leg I was in a small regional jet and was the only soldier in uniform and was still thanked by the flight crew as well as the people sitting around me.

A big change compared to the days of Vietnam!

Go to MSN Videos and under the Specials column you can watch most of the more popular commercials.  You will need a broadband connection to do it without going crazy though.  Sorry the link below is so crazy.

I'm sure Ameriquest is thrilled that so many people remember their commercial.....which, i agree were pretty damn funny.

But, alas, I wonder if they're keen enough to pick up on the fact that no one can remember the fact it was an Ameriquest Ad.

sometimes in the rush to be the "cool", "funny" or "imaginative" ad companies lose site of the purpose of it....to brand their name in some way, shape or form.
