In the race where do you carry spare tube, tools, etc?

Saddle bag is a bit fiddly getting it off and back on. Pockets mean stuffing things in in transition.

What do you do?

Tools and such in the bag, tubular tire strapped underneath that with an old school toe clip strap.

The only thing that goes on my person will be some gel packets or a gel bottle.

Saddle bag, and it stays on the bike. No getting it off and back on until you need it.

Strapped under my seat to the seat post. Jersey is for my nutrition only.

Saddle bag.

Not sure why you would be taking your saddle bag off and on.

I have a saddle bag from REI that has a mounting bracket and it's quite easy to take on and off which is great when I stop someplace and don't want to leave my phone, money car keys etc on my bike if I go in.  It's where my spare tools and tubes go.  In my jersey are just nutrition, inhaler and lip balm.  In a race of course I'm only carrying the necessary tools.

I ride with a Camelbak and it has a good sized pocket that holds the spare things I need.

I only take the saddle bag off when I need to change a flat. Just realised maybe I don't have to take it right off. Loosent the velcro and open while still attached to the bike. Never through of that!

I've had plenty of flats.  I never take the saddlebag off.  Like others have said, just keep you tool and tire supplies (and maybe a spare $20) in the bag, and leave it alone.  Snacks, cell phone, basically anything that doesn't "live" on the bike, goes elsewhere (jersey pocket, bento box, camelback, whatever).

The only other thing to remember is to replace anything that got used (it's REALLY inconvenient to get you next flat and realize the "spare" is the last flat...

Why would you be stuffing things in during transition? Saddle bag and or bento box, anything like a gel or something that would go in my tri tank are usually taped to my bike,

Sprint or Oly: No spare, no tools, and certainly no saddle bag. Aerodrink is only hydration with no add'l cages. One gel taped to frame. If I blow a tire at this distance it's over and I fight another day.

HIM or IM: One tubular tire with 2 CO2's, inflator, and razor blade all taped together nice and tight with electrical tape, held in place by the straps of my hydrotail.

You also wait an indeterminate time for a ride back, or walk as much as 12 miles back to the transition area. With a spare, at least you have a ride home.

Saddle bag or bento box. Both for HIM and IM.

I was thinking the same thing.  I've got a 19.5m (one loop) bike portion in my next sprint, and I wouldn't want to walk back 1 mile, much less almost 10 in bare feet.  Walking in cleats would be even worse.

Saddle bag for tube, levers, small patch kit, CO2, bike tool.

Tri shorts pockets for one or two gels for sprint/oly; bento box for nutrition for HIM. Only time I've used the pockets in my tri top was for spare run nutrition for HIM. (Same goes for jersey pockets when I used to wear a jersey rather than a tri top.)

x3.  There's no good reason to not just leave the emergency supplies on the bike. It's highly unlikely that your time will be affected by their weight and it's one less thing to fiddle with. I mean, do you take the spare out of your car because you are not driving very far? After all, gas mileage is affected by the total weight of the vehicle, and with gas north of $3.50/gallon who knows how much money you would save...

LOL, I don't think I have ever done a race that hasn't had these sad sacks sitting by the side of the road waiting for someone to bail them out or just walking their bikes back miles and miles.

Like the weight of a tube and CO2 was going to make or break their race.

For some of us at least, there is a 3rd option. XLab has several varieties of the gizmo that mounts on the back of the seat (Or Seatpost in my case) and includes a place to put water bottles as well as tubes, C02 and levers. (No need to a Saddle Bag but you can use one if you want)

I used to use a small saddle bag that I cinched up as tight as I could manage on the seat stays (Just behind my seat and below my hydration rack) but with my new bike (A Cervelo P2C), I will be using the XLab Sonic Wing
