Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm away from home and I want to ride my tri bike to the pool to go swim and I'm wondering what people do with their bikes...(I just got my new tri bike a few weeks ago...and I'm still kind of paranoid...I keep my bike literally locked with my lock in my car)...Do I just lock it outside...do i try and bring it inside? I'm not sure what is kosher... |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I know most all the folks that work at the Y and I bring it in, point it out to the folks and leave it to the side someplace near the front desk. My bike costs to much to leave outside. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Check with your gym. My gym told me I had to keep my biked locked up outside, and I told her that Bella is a little too precious to be locked to a bike rack ![]() |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My gym doesn't have a bike rack so i just take it in, place it somewhere safe and out of the way and tell the person at the front desk to look out for it. Still though, it is very disconcerting to have such an expensive bike not locked up which is why I usually ride my cheapo road bike instead of my tri bike whenever I am going somewhere I might worry like that (I hate it though, my tri bike is soooo nice to ride) |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() ride the steel bianchi to the pool and lock her up. a rhino could pound on that thing and it would still ride smooth. -you did say you were away from home though, I usually travel with both bikes, 1.because of stuff like you have encountered, and 2.because i always have secret hope that someone will spontaneously decide they want to go bike with me ![]() |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Locks only keep the honest people honest. Any crook with $20 can buy (or likely already has) bolt cutters that will cut any lock you care to be hauling around with you. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Check with the gym. They should be able to provide some reasonably secure area where you can LOCK your bike. Yes, it may be an outside rack next to the front doors and parking lot in which case you need to decide if it's worth it or not. No, it isn't appropriate to ask the desk attendant to watch your bike (and it may be against fire codes to leave it in a hallway). |

Any crook with $20 can buy (or likely already has) bolt cutters that will cut any lock you care to be hauling around with you. That's not completely true. Bolt cutters are pretty useless on cable locks (I know from honest experience). However cable cutters are a different story. But yeah, locks will only keep the unmotivated from stealing your bike. A seasoned bike thief can break pretty much any lock in under a minute. Most experienced bike mechanics can break a lock in under a minute (you have no idea how often people lose their keys or forget their combos and expect the shop to have a solution other then cut it off and buy a new one). The only locks that fair better, but are still breakable, are the New York series from kryptonite. |

![]() ![]() | ![]() When I go away I keep the tri bike at home and take the $600 roadie..Id be pissed if that got stolen too but less pissed than if the $2k bike was lifted. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I don’t ride my bike to the gym just because the gym I go to won’t let me take it inside. My bike is only an $1000 road bike and compared to what some of your bikes cost I’m sure that is just petty cash but it sure isn’t to me and well I can’t afford to buy another one so I simply don’t take the chance. |

My "tri" bike isn't worth that much compared to most peoples' but it's mine and I don't want it stolen or jacked with. |

I cleaned up my old road bike that I havent' ridden since I got my tri bike a couple years back. In addition the manager at the gym doesn't allow bikes inside, after I had done it a couple of times, he found me and explained his reasoning. So Now I do lock it up outside which is right next to the front doors, and point it out to the front desk staff, that if anyone if messing with it just bang on the pool window I'll come out to deal with it. |

My wife's co-worker had someone cut into his lock at the gym, take his car keys and steal his car (which was worth more than most bikes....). A few weeks later, they caught the guy when he came back to the gym, and pulled it off again with another car. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I tend to try to use my cheaper roadie if I'm going to do something like that. But even then, every time I walked outside after the workout I had the thought in my head that possibly the bike wouldn't be there when I came out...even if locked it up. I get nervous enough leaving my bike outside of a gas station while I run into get a drink and use the potty, so I doubt I could leave him alone too long without being all worried. And I'm sure as heck not going to depend on the front desk staff to watch out for my bike. Locking it is the best you can really do...maybe use more than one lock? |
